Job Overview

The z/VM Systems Programmer on the LinuxONE mainframe platform is responsible for installing, configuring, securing, and maintaining z/VM environments to ensure high availability, performance, and reliability for enterprise workloads. This role includes managing virtualization resources, automating system operations, troubleshooting complex incidents, and collaborating with infrastructure, security, and application teams to support scalable Linux-based services.

Team/Role Overview

The team provides end-to-end engineering support for LinuxONE environments, combining core platform work on z/VM, Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), and integrated infrastructure services from IBM and Velocity vendors. The organization manages z/VM across more than 200 LPARs and supports over 8,000 hosted Linux instances, delivering secure, resilient, and high-performing enterprise operations.

What you’ll do

• Operate and optimize z/VM environments on LinuxONE by handling daily system health checks, capacity trends, performance tuning, and incident prevention.
• Manage lifecycle activities for z/VM, RHEL, and supporting IBM/Velocity software, including installs, upgrades, patching, and configuration hardening.
• Administer large-scale virtualization estates (200+ LPARs and 8,000+ Linux guests) with a focus on availability, stability, and efficient resource utilization.
• Troubleshoot complex platform, network, storage, and guest-level issues, then drive root-cause analysis and permanent fixes.
• Automate repetitive operational tasks using scripts and tooling to improve consistency, reduce risk, and increase delivery speed.
• Serve the core purpose of the role: ensure secure, resilient, and high-performing LinuxONE services that enable critical business applications.
• Partner day-to-day with global, regional, and local engineering, operations, security, and application teams to coordinate changes and resolve cross-team dependencies.
• Contribute to governance and continuous improvement through documentation, standards compliance, change management, and knowledge sharing with colleagues and clients.

What we’ll need from you

• 6-10 years of hands-on experience in infrastructure engineering or service delivery, with a strong record of improving operational processes, reliability, and service outcomes.
• Proven expertise in enterprise hosting platforms, ideally including z/VM and Linux (RHEL), with solid understanding of virtualization, performance, availability, and capacity management.
• Ability to design and implement meaningful operational metrics, analytics, benchmarking frameworks, and continuous-improvement practices.
• Strong understanding of how infrastructure services support business priorities, including awareness of market trends, vendor capabilities, and competitive solutions.
• Demonstrated success working across global teams (virtual and in-person), managing competing priorities, and delivering to tight deadlines in high-pressure environments.
• Experience in Financial Services or another large, complex, highly regulated enterprise environment is strongly preferred.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with strong analytical and diagnostic problem-solving capabilities.
• Ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear, actionable language for non-technical stakeholders and senior management.
