Job Overview
We are now looking for a Managing Director to lead and build our Telecommunications, Media and Technology (TMT) Corporate Banking franchise in China. This is a P&L-owing leadership mandate with full responsibility for sector strategy, revenue generation, talent development and portfolio management. You will define where and how we compete across China’s TMT landscape, spanning internet platforms, cloud infrastructure, AL compute, semiconductor ecosystems and cross-border digital commerce. And ensure we capture market share by delivering market-defining transactions and board level strategic counsel. You are expected to operate as both a franchise architect and a senior deal captain, with the judgment to balance aggressive growth against disciplined risk and capital allocation.
Responsibilities:
Franchise Strategy & P&L Ownership
- Architect and execute a multi-year sector strategy with clear revenue, return, and market-share targets aligned to the firm’s China and Cluster priorities. Lead and work closely with a team of Relationship Managers in Corporate Banking and manage the relationship with existing clients as well as develop new business for the targeted client segment
- Define our target client universe and prioritization framework, ensuring the franchise concentrates capital and talent where Citi’s global network, balance sheet, and product capabilities create asymmetric advantage.
- Establish Citi as the premier banking partner for China’s TMT champions by developing proprietary sector insights, hosting c-suite and board-level dialogues, and shaping the market narrative around capital structure, M&A, and international expansion.
Transaction Origination & Cross-Product Orchestration
- Serve as the senior deal captain on the firm’s most complex TMT financings, including acquisition and leveraged finance, syndicate lending, debt capital markets, structured credit and integrated treasury solutions.
- Orchestrate the full Citi product capabilities, including Corporate Banking, Investment Banking, Markets, and Treasury & Trade service. To originate multi-product, multi-jurisdiction transactions that deepen client wallet share and generate premium risk-adjusted returns.
- Translate client strategic priorities (M&A, capex cycles, supply-chain globalization, AI infrastructure build-out) into actionable financing and risk-management architectures, originating both episodic and recurring revenue streams.
- Provide sophisticated financial solutions tailored to clients’ needs and act as a content provider on industry and market trends.
Talent Development and Team Building
- Build, recruit and retain a world-class team of Relationship managers and sector specialists; set a high-performance culture defined by intellectual curiosity, commercial urgency and uncompromising risk discipline.
- Act as a career architect and active sponsor for high-potential bankers, creating cross-product and cross-border stretch assignments that accelerate the development of the next generation of Managing Directors and sector leaders.
- Model and enforce a “One Citi” mindset, ensuring bankers operate as franchise owners who originate across silos and are rewarded for multi-product client impact.
Portfolio Risk & Capital Management
- Own the credit quality, capital efficiency and structural integrity of the TMT portfolio; Partner with Risk, Capital Management, and Legal to construct transactions that meet or exceed return hurdles while safeguarding the firm’s balance sheet and reputation.
- Anticipate and mitigate sector-specific risks, including regulatory shifts, capital market volatility, cross-boarder sanction exposure and technology obsolescence, embedding proactive risk frameworks into client strategy and deal structuring.
- Appropriately assess risk when business decisions are made, demonstrating particular consideration for the firm's reputation and safeguarding Citigroup, its clients and assets, by driving compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations, adhering to Policy, applying sound ethical judgment regarding personal behavior, conduct and business practices, and escalating, managing and reporting control issues with transparency.
Internal Leadership & External Influence
- Represent the TMT franchise in firm-wide strategic planning, resource allocation, and senior leadership forums; advocate for product, platform and policy investments that strengthen competitive positioning.
- Maintain senior relationships across regulators, investors and industry bodies to ensure Citi’s perspective influences market practice and policy development.
Qualifications:
- 15+ years of progressive experience in Corporate Banking, Investment Banking or Structured Finance, with deep and demonstrable expertise in TMT sector coverage and complex transaction execution.
- A proven franchise builder with a track record of scaling a business, team, or market presence from strategy to sustained revenue growth and market-share gains. Experience in originating, structuring, and executing transactions and financings.
- Comprehensive knowledge of corporate banking business including deep product fluency across lending, capital markets, derivatives, treasury, cash management, trade, and structured finance, with the ability to architect integrated solutions and negotiate internal capital and risk appetite.
- Boardroom presence and C-suite credibility: exceptional written and verbal communication skills; ability to articulate high-conviction themes, challenge client thinking, and command trust at the highest level.
- Strategic commercial instincts balanced with rigorous risk judgment; demonstrated experience navigating complex credit, regulatory , and geopolitical environments.
- A talent magnet and developer: demonstrated success in recruiting, mentoring and promoting diverse bankers into senior leadership roles across a global and multi-country matrix structure.
- Native Mandarin required; fluent English essential. Ability to operate seamlessly across local and global contexts, influencing stakeholders across time zones and reporting lines.
Education:
- Bachelor's degree required; MBA, CFA or equivalent advanced credential preferred.
