Discover your future at Citi
Working at Citi is far more than just a job. A career with us means joining a team of approximately 219,000 dedicated people from around the globe. At Citi, you’ll have the opportunity to grow your career, give back to your community and make a real impact.
Job Overview
Job Specification:
We are seeking a Lead Java Engineer to head the XiP Compute Service (XCS) team — the engine room of Citi's enterprise-scale XiNG Platform (XiP), responsible for orchestrating and executing 1.5 billion risk calculations every day.
As the lead of the XCS team, you will own the design, development, and evolution of the most performance-critical component within XiP. XiP is Citi's unified risk calculation platform built on the XiNG quantitative libraries standard, and XCS sits at its core — providing the powerful compute paradigms and guardrails that enable calculations to run reliably at massive scale.
Your team is the engine that daily coordinates hundreds of thousands of pods, consumes tens of thousands of compute nodes, utilises hundreds of TB of memory, and distributes hundreds of millions of calculations across Citi's private cloud and Public cloud infrastructures. The platform is both highly performant and rapidly evolving, and your leadership will be central to driving it to its next generation of scale, efficiency, and capability.
You will work closely with other software engineers, DevOps, and our customers to define technical strategy and ensure the reliable, secure, and scalable operation of the platform.
Responsibilities
Take a lead in defining the long-term strategic direction of the XiP Platform:
Apply your experience and skills to develop the future versions of the calculation engine. This means making it faster, utilize resources better, and scale to even greater sizes. This means adding new features without impacting performance of the platform in an undesirable manner, as small changes multiplied by millions of calculations have a high cost. This means solving hard problems like transferring small amounts of data to a huge number of machines.
Take on the day-to-day leadership of the development team:
Lead the team's Agile/Scrum ceremonies, including sprint planning, daily stand-ups, and retrospectives, to ensure a smooth and effective development workflow. Manage the project backlog, prioritize tasks, and coordinate development efforts to align with the product roadmap and strategic goals. Provide hands-on technical leadership, guiding the team in architectural decisions and enforcing coding standards.
Serve as advisor or coach to team members, allocating and overseeing work:
Mentor and guide developers, providing technical advice, code reviews, and career development support. Allocate tasks based on skill sets and project priorities, ensuring balanced workloads and timely delivery. Foster a collaborative and growth-oriented team environment, encouraging best practices and continuous learning.
Lead the implementation of changes and improvements to Citi's Risk Calculation Engine:
Lead the design, development, and implementation of enhancements to the Risk Calculation Engine, focusing on optimizing its distribution mechanisms. Analyze current parallelization strategies, which regularly handle 250,000 hours of compute in a single 90-minute execution, and identify opportunities to further improve efficiency, scalability, and throughput.
Plan, coordinate, and execute strategic changes to the engine to reach the next scaling milestone:
Develop and manage strategic initiatives aimed at scaling the Risk Calculation Engine to meet future business demands. Coordinate with stakeholders to ensure that all scaling efforts are aligned with customer needs.

- Exposure to cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP) and containerization (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).
- Experience with RESTful API design and implementation.
- Strong understanding of object-oriented programming and design patterns.
- Experience working in Agile/Scrum development environments, preferably in a leadership capacity.
- Experience with unit testing, integration testing, and test automation frameworks (e.g., JUnit, Mockito).
- Exposure to NoSQL databases (e.g., MongoDB, Cassandra) is a plus.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices is a plus.
