Job Overview

Job Description

Citi is seeking a VP or AVP level Trader for the Strategic Equity Solutions Fund Financing Trading Desk (NAV & LP-Interest Lending). Fund Financing is a specialized, growing niche within the desk, and the current and future size of the business requires greater initial and ongoing asset analysis and risk management.

The Strategic Equity Solutions Financing Trader is an analytically-focused role primarily on the NAV & LP-Interest Lending desk, combining fundamental credit/collateral judgment with hands-on quantitative modeling. The overall objective of this role is to strengthen the desk's asset analysis, collateral evaluation, and portfolio risk-monitoring capabilities — improving the quality and speed of the fundamental views that drive trade decisions.

Responsibilities:

Portfolio & Asset Analysis

  • Perform portfolio and asset analysis, collate company/collateral information, evaluate portfolio strength and weakness, and perform red-flag analysis.

  • Source and critically evaluate public information (news, sector data, ratings actions) and private sponsor-shared information (valuation reports, LP fund reports, capital account statements, ad-hoc data).

  • Assess sponsor reporting quality, valuation frameworks and consistency of application, and track record by PE sponsor.

  • Build trend analysis of position marking; cross-check valuations with DCF or comparable-company multiples using normalized EBITDA/EBITDAC; identify valuation anomalies and risk assets requiring further work.

  • Discuss data sourcing with Fund Finance team and prioritize extraction from sponsors.

Structural & Financial Reconciliation

  • Investigate the legal and financial structures of each transaction; understand the interrelation between asset quality, realization lifetime, and downside valuations, and the key terms of loan documentation (security and enforcement rights, ability to realize asset value in default, and overall risk/reward).

  • Reconcile the borrowing base to third-party audited or reviewed data (third-party valuation reports, bank reporting packs, year-end audited accounts).

  • Tie reconciliations back to underlying facility documentation (advance rates, eligibility, exclusions, covenants) — confirming both the numbers and their compliance with the credit agreement.

  • Work with the origination and risk teams to investigate and correct errors and liaise with Borrowers.

Reporting Standardization & IBR Liaison

  • Own the setup and management of a repeatable monthly/quarterly process to log and report on the post-closing borrowing-base reconciliation to Loan Agreement reporting packages, acting as an early-alert system for stressed, materially mismarked, or divergent assets.

  • Ensure output is being fed to the broader Trading team and the booking system used for positions.

Market Data, News Flow & Credit Marks

  • Track information, news flow, and credit marks from public sources (loan marks, BDC marks, secondary LP pricing, comparable spreads); produce summaries and ongoing dashboards.

  • Maintain a consolidated marks & liquidity view; flag divergences between carried marks and external evidence; surface stale or aggressive marks.

  • Build system transparency to capture and flag material observations to Fund Finance and the sponsor.

Financial Modeling & Loan Simulation

  • Build Excel models per portfolio to simulate cash flows and LTV migration, coverage, and amortization under differing asset-realization scenarios, considering tail risk at maturity or end of fund life.

  • Further develop a Trading Desk stress-testing framework (extendable to rates, refi, and NAV-drawdown shocks).

Governance & Controls

  • Work in close partnership with control functions (Legal, Compliance, Market and Credit Risk, Audit, Finance) to ensure appropriate governance and control infrastructure.

  • Appropriately assess risk/reward of transactions, demonstrating consideration for the firm's reputation and safeguarding Citigroup, its clients, and assets, by driving compliance with applicable laws, rules, and regulations, adhering to Policy, applying sound ethical judgment, and escalating and reporting control issues with transparency.

  • Adhere to Citi's Code of Conduct and the Plan of Supervision for Global Markets and Securities Services, and to all policies and procedures defined for the role.

Recommended Qualifications

  • 4–10 years of experience in a related role (structured credit, fund finance, distressed/fundamental credit, or financing/trading analytics).

  • Fundamental credit and collateral analysis skills, including valuation cross-checks (DCF and comparable-company multiples using normalized EBITDA/EBITDAC).

  • Strong financial modeling capability — Excel-based cash flow, LTV migration, coverage, amortization, and stress-testing frameworks.

  • Understanding of loan documentation, borrowing-base mechanics, security/enforcement rights, and reconciliation to third-party data.

  • Advanced analytical and numerical competency; ability to analyze situations and determine suitable outcomes.

  • Consistently demonstrates clear and concise written and verbal communication.

  • Effective interpersonal skills to develop and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders across Trading, IBR, Fund Finance, and Structuring.

  • Knowledge of Bloomberg, booking systems, and trading/closing technicalities.

  • Required licensing and registrations as applicable.

Education

  • Bachelor's degree / University degree or equivalent experience.

  • Master's degree preferred.
