Job Overview
Job Overview
The Vice President will be a senior execution member of the Strategic Principal Investments team, with a focus on specialty lending, asset-backed finance, private credit technology, real asset and collateral workflows, origination platforms, servicing infrastructure, data and analytics, AI-enabled underwriting, embedded finance and adjacent financial technology themes.
The successful candidate will need to combine investment judgment, credit and asset finance intuition, strategic thinking, internal stakeholder management, governance discipline and portfolio value creation. The role requires the ability to assess whether a company can create real strategic value for Citi, whether Citi has a right to win as an investor or commercial partner, and whether the investment is appropriately structured, governed and risk-managed.
The role will work closely with senior stakeholders across Markets, Risk, Securitization, Structured Finance, Private Credit, Operations, Technology, Legal, Compliance, Finance, Accounting, Treasury and other control functions.
Responsibilities
- Source and evaluate new strategic investment opportunities aligned to Citi’s priorities in specialty lending, private credit, asset-backed finance, origination infrastructure, collateral data, servicing technology, workflow automation and AI-enabled financial services
- Develop and maintain investment theses in priority areas and convert those theses into actionable pipeline, diligence plans and investment recommendations
- Lead or support the full transaction lifecycle, including initial screen, strategic rationale, financial analysis, valuation, commercial diligence, risk assessment, governance review, term sheet negotiation, documentation and internal approvals
- Prepare clear investment committee materials that articulate the strategic rationale, financial case, valuation, key risks, downside protections, governance rights, commercial pathway and expected value to Citi
- Partner with business stakeholders to validate commercial use cases, identify internal sponsors, test adoption assumptions and establish measurable strategic outcomes before and after investment
- Assess companies across both financial and strategic dimensions, including business model quality, origination quality, asset performance, credit risk, funding model, unit economics, revenue quality, technology differentiation, regulatory considerations, scalability and exit potential
- Evaluate transaction structures, governance rights, information rights, board or observer rights, minority protections, follow-on obligations, conflicts, accounting implications, RWA impact and regulatory constraints
- Analyze the quality and durability of underlying assets, including collateral characteristics, historical performance, loss assumptions, advance rates, servicing capabilities, funding strategy and sensitivity to macroeconomic conditions
- Support negotiations with founders, management teams, existing investors, financial sponsors, strategic co-investors and commercial counterparties
- Manage a portfolio of existing investments, including regular performance reviews, valuation updates, risk assessments, board preparation and internal stakeholder reporting
- Help portfolio companies navigate Citi where appropriate, including introductions to relevant product, risk, banking, markets, technology, operations, procurement and business stakeholders
- Drive value creation from existing portfolio companies by converting strategic intent into measurable adoption, revenue, cost reduction, better asset access, improved underwriting, operational efficiency or faster time to market
- Identify portfolio risks early, escalate appropriately and work with internal partners to determine remediation, restructuring, follow-on, exit or impairment recommendations
- Represent Citi professionally with founders, venture investors, financial sponsors, private credit platforms, lending businesses, infrastructure providers, fintech companies and strategic partners
- Mentor junior team members on investment analysis, financial modeling, diligence, credit analysis, memo writing, portfolio management and internal governance
- Contribute to senior management updates, portfolio reviews, pipeline reviews, business strategy discussions and ad hoc analysis for Citi leadership
Qualifications
- 6-10 years of relevant professional experience, preferably with at least 4 years of investment, corporate development, investment banking, venture capital, private equity, private credit, structured finance, securitization, fintech, strategy or principal investing experience
- Transaction experience across sourcing, evaluation, financial modeling, valuation, due diligence, negotiation, documentation and portfolio management
- Strong understanding of financial services, with direct exposure to specialty lending, private credit, asset-backed finance, securitization, structured finance, fintech, lending platforms or institutional financial technology strongly preferred
- Familiarity with one or more relevant areas, including consumer finance, SME lending, equipment finance, receivables finance, real estate finance, mortgage technology, auto finance, student lending, insurance finance, trade finance, warehouse lending, private credit, servicing, collections, collateral verification, data infrastructure or workflow automation
- Ability to understand how a technology company, lending platform or asset finance infrastructure provider can create practical business value inside a large global financial institution
- Strong commercial judgment and ability to distinguish attractive companies from investable strategic opportunities for Citi
- Strong valuation and financial modeling skills, including venture and growth-stage valuation, scenario analysis, cap table analysis, dilution, exit analysis and return sensitivity
- Ability to analyze asset performance, credit risk, funding models, unit economics, cohort performance, default curves, loss assumptions, advance rates, servicing quality and capital intensity
- Ability to evaluate investment structures, shareholder rights, governance rights, downside protections, conflicts, regulatory considerations and commercial obligations
- Strong written communication skills, with the ability to produce concise, senior-ready investment memos and recommendations
- Strong verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage senior stakeholders, founders, investors and control functions directly and credibly
- Ability to operate independently in a highly matrixed global organization and influence stakeholders without direct authority
- Strong attention to detail, sound judgment, intellectual curiosity and willingness to challenge assumptions
- Comfort with ambiguity, incomplete information and fast-moving transaction processes
- High ownership mentality and ability to manage multiple live investments, portfolio issues and internal priorities at the same time
- Strong proficiency in Excel and PowerPoint; familiarity with data analysis tools, AI tools or Python is a plus
Preferred experience
- Experience investing in or advising specialty lending, private credit, asset-backed finance, fintech, embedded finance, servicing, data, analytics, workflow automation or AI-enabled financial services companies
- Experience working directly with lending, securitization, structured finance, credit risk, capital markets, banking, operations or technology teams in a global financial institution
- Experience with warehouse facilities, forward flow agreements, securitizations, credit funds, asset-backed structures or lending platform economics
- Experience with minority investment governance, board observer responsibilities, strategic partnerships or commercial agreements
- Experience with bank regulatory, accounting, risk, compliance or capital considerations relevant to principal investments
- Experience preparing investment committee materials and presenting recommendations to senior decision makers
- MBA, CFA or other advanced degree is helpful but not required
Operating model
The successful candidate will be expected to operate with a high degree of autonomy and judgment. The role requires someone who can move between external market engagement, detailed investment work, credit and asset analysis, internal governance and senior stakeholder management without losing discipline or commercial focus.
This individual should be comfortable being both investor and operator: rigorous on valuation, credit quality and downside risk, but equally focused on whether Citi can create and capture strategic value from the investment.
