Discover your future at Citi

Working at Citi is far more than just a job. A career with us means joining a team of approximately 219,000 dedicated people from around the globe. At Citi, you’ll have the opportunity to grow your career, give back to your community and make a real impact.

Job Overview

Citi is looking for a Lead Software Engineer to architect and deliver next-generation Agentic AI applications at the intersection of full-stack engineering and large language model integration. In this senior role, you will define the technical direction for AI-powered platforms, lead teams of engineers, and build production-grade systems that power autonomous, multi-agent workflows across Citi's global technology organization. This is a rare opportunity to shape how Agentic AI is designed, deployed, and governed at enterprise scale within one of the world's largest financial institutions.

Responsibilities

  • Architect secure, resilient, and high-performance full-stack applications designed to support complex Agentic AI workflows at enterprise scale.

  • Lead hands-on development across the full application stack — from React and TypeScript frontends to Python and Java microservices and RESTful/gRPC APIs — ensuring code is clean, modular, and production-ready.

  • Design and implement stateful, multi-turn, and multi-agent AI workflows using frameworks such as LangChain, LangGraph, CrewAI, AutoGen, or Semantic Kernel.

  • Integrate applications with Citi's secure LLM gateway to access and manage AI models from Azure, Vertex, and other providers, including token usage, rate limits, and billing analytics.

  • Establish and enforce technical standards, design patterns, and engineering best practices for full-stack development and AI agent integration across teams.

  • Architect data models and integrate with relational and vector databases to enable stateful AI operations across complex, data-intensive workflows.

  • Lead and develop multiple engineering teams, owning performance evaluations, hiring decisions, and the technical growth of team members.

  • Evaluate emerging AI frameworks and tooling to evolve the technical stack and maintain a competitive engineering capability.

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • 6 or more years of software engineering experience, with demonstrated ownership of technical delivery and team leadership across complex, large-scale programs.

  • Deep expertise in frontend development using React, TypeScript, HTML5, and CSS3, with a focus on building responsive, accessible, and production-grade user interfaces.

  • Advanced proficiency in Python (FastAPI, Flask, Celery) and/or Java (Spring Boot, Spring Cloud) for building scalable backend services and APIs.

  • Proven ability to design and build Agentic AI and LLM-integrated systems, with applied knowledge of Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), vector embeddings, and semantic search.

  • Hands-on experience with Kubernetes, Red Hat OpenShift, Docker, and CI/CD platforms such as Harness, Jenkins, or Tekton for cloud-native deployments.

  • Solid command of enterprise security principles, including OAuth2, OIDC, TLS, and secrets management using tools such as HashiCorp Vault.

  • Experience designing and querying both relational databases (PostgreSQL, Oracle) and NoSQL databases (MongoDB, Couchbase) within production environments.

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.

Beneficial Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience deploying and managing agents on enterprise Agentic AI runtime platforms, with familiarity around network policy compliance, egress controls, and resource governance.

  • Familiarity with Model Context Protocol (MCP) for mediating agent interactions with downstream business systems and databases.

  • Experience with NoSQL and vector database technologies such as Milvus or Pinecone in support of AI-native data architectures.

  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related discipline.

What We Offer

Joining Citi means working on technology that operates at global scale, with the scope and resources to make a genuine impact. As a Lead Software Engineer at this level, you will have real ownership over technical direction, access to cutting-edge AI infrastructure, and the opportunity to shape how enterprise-grade Agentic AI evolves within one of the world's most complex financial organizations.

  • A hybrid working model with 3 days in the office and 2 days working remotely, giving you the structure of collaboration alongside meaningful flexibility.

  • Strategic ownership over high-impact engineering decisions that influence how AI systems are built and deployed across Citi globally.

  • Exposure to advanced AI and LLM infrastructure at a scale few organizations can offer, keeping your technical capabilities at the forefront of the industry.

  • Continuous learning and development opportunities, including access to emerging tools, frameworks, and engineering practices as they evolve.

  • A performance-driven environment where your contributions to delivery, architecture, and team development are recognized and rewarded.

  • Competitive financial wellbeing support, including compensation and benefits designed to reflect the seniority and scope of this role.

  • The ability to lead, mentor, and grow engineering teams, building lasting capability and technical culture within a global organization.

Apply now to lead the engineering of Agentic AI systems that will define how one of the world's largest financial institutions builds, deploys, and scales intelligent technology.
