Discover your future at Citi

Working at Citi is far more than just a job. A career with us means joining a team of approximately 219,000 dedicated people from around the globe. At Citi, you’ll have the opportunity to grow your career, give back to your community and make a real impact.

Job Overview

Citi is looking for an experienced Cards Litigation Paralegal to join its in-house Legal team, serving as the operational owner of consumer litigation and arbitration matters across the US Cards (USCC) portfolio. In this role, you will partner directly with in-house counsel to manage cases from intake through resolution, playing a central part in protecting Citi's position across state and federal courts, arbitrations, mediations, and small claims proceedings. This is a high-impact opportunity for a seasoned litigation paralegal to take ownership of a complex caseload within a globally connected legal function.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary operational owner of assigned litigation and arbitration matters, managing each case efficiently from initial intake through to final resolution in partnership with in-house counsel.
  • Review complaints, pleadings, and discovery requests and responses, prepare escalation summaries, assess potential liability, identify available defenses, and recommend appropriate next steps.
  • Independently establish, maintain, and update all assigned matters in the legal matter management system on a timely basis, ensuring accurate and complete records at every stage of the case lifecycle.
  • Obtain, organize, and produce account records, fraud and dispute files, recordings, business records, and other evidence that supports Citi's position in each matter.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for all communications with internal business partners and outside counsel, coordinating information flow and ensuring alignment across all parties throughout the lifecycle of a matter.
  • Monitor case progression proactively, identify outstanding tasks or potential delays, escalate observed systemic or process irregularities, and coordinate witnesses for deposition or trial preparation.
  • Handle small claims hearings, pre-hearing settlement conferences, and telephonic hearings independently, and manage settlement documentation, execution, payment coordination, and final account notation through to resolution.
  • Apply knowledge of consumer protection laws, federal and state civil procedure rules, and arbitration regulations to support sound legal decision-making and case strategy.

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • 5 or more years of litigation paralegal experience within a financial institution or other highly regulated industry, with demonstrated exposure to matters in state and federal courts, arbitrations, mediations, or small claims proceedings.
  • Working knowledge of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, state civil procedure rules, and rules governing arbitration, alongside familiarity with consumer protection laws and regulations.
  • Ability to manage a high-volume caseload with minimal supervision while maintaining accuracy, sound judgment, and consistent attention to detail across all case documentation.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage professionally with in-house counsel, business partners, outside counsel, and members of the public in both collaborative and adversarial contexts.
  • Demonstrated organizational and project management capability, with the ability to track multiple concurrent matters, meet tight deadlines, and escalate risks or delays proactively.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook, and comfort working with legal matter management systems.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent; a Master's degree is preferred.

Beneficial Skills & Qualifications

  • Familiarity with Citi's US Cards (USCC) business and account systems used in its operations, with a willingness to develop competence in systems that support Wealth and Retail lines of business.
  • Ability to retrieve and compile account documentation directly from internal systems in support of active litigation matters.
  • Experience leveraging generative AI tools responsibly to improve efficiency, document organization, and work quality, while maintaining attorney-client privilege, confidentiality, and applicable policy requirements.
  • Prior in-house legal experience within financial services, providing a working understanding of how legal risk and documentation requirements vary by product and jurisdiction.

What We Offer

At Citi, you will work within a collaborative and performance-driven legal environment, supporting some of the most significant consumer financial matters across a globally connected institution. This role offers a clear opportunity to take meaningful ownership, develop cross-functional expertise, and contribute to outcomes that matter at scale.

  • A hybrid working arrangement, with 3 days in the office and 2 days working remotely, giving you flexibility while keeping you connected to your team.
  • Exposure to a broad portfolio of consumer litigation matters across Cards, Retail, Wealth, and Mortgage business lines, expanding your expertise beyond a single practice area.
  • The opportunity to work directly with in-house counsel and senior legal leadership, giving you visibility and collaborative access at a high level within the organization.
  • Access to learning and professional development resources that support your growth as a litigation professional within a complex, regulated financial services environment.
  • Wellbeing and financial support programs designed to help you manage the demands of a high-impact role while maintaining long-term work-life balance.
  • A competitive compensation and benefits package, including localized benefits relevant to your work location.
