Job Overview
Citi is seeking a senior Credit Underwriting Manager to lead a team of underwriting analysts within its Institutional Credit Management (ICM) group, a first-line-of-defense function responsible for end-to-end wholesale credit risk management across Citi's institutional client base. In this role, you will own a portfolio of corporate client relationships, drive credit approval decisions, and set the standard for rigorous credit analysis across Corporate Banking, Services, and Markets. This is a high-impact leadership opportunity at the intersection of credit underwriting, risk governance, and client partnership, with direct visibility to senior stakeholders across the firm.
Responsibilities
- Lead the end-to-end credit underwriting process for a portfolio of institutional corporate clients, from early origination through to the preparation and presentation of credit approval memos at senior approval forums.
- Review and provide sign-off on financial analysis, due diligence, projection modeling, stress testing, and risk rating assessments completed by junior analysts, ensuring accuracy and alignment with credit standards.
- Assess and articulate credit recommendations to Risk in both written and verbal format, clearly communicating risk/return trade-offs associated with transactions and client relationships.
- Partner with Front Office teams to structure new transactions and support negotiation of legal documentation, bringing credit expertise to deal origination discussions.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for credit-related discussions with internal and external auditors, as well as regulators and control functions.
- Manage and develop a team of underwriting analysts, overseeing workload allocation, identifying staffing solutions for urgent deliverables, and leading recruiting and onboarding where required.
- Monitor macroeconomic and industry-specific developments relevant to the coverage portfolio and apply those insights to credit reviews and portfolio stress testing.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- 10 or more years of credit risk or credit-related experience within banking or financial institutions, with demonstrated expertise in end-to-end credit underwriting, credit analysis, financial spreading, and credit memo approval.
- Ability to independently manage a portfolio of institutional client relationships, including the timely production of annual and quarterly credit reviews and ad-hoc transaction support.
- Strong credit risk assessment capability, including the ability to identify issues early, structure solutions, and make well-reasoned recommendations under time pressure.
- Solid understanding of capital markets products and complex financing structures, with the ability to evaluate risk assets and risk capital implications in partnership with banking and product teams.
- Demonstrated ability to engage effectively with regulators, internal audit, and fundamental credit risk functions, as well as external auditors.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present clearly and persuasively to senior audiences of varying sizes and backgrounds.
- High ethical standards, sound judgment, and the ability to see the broader strategic picture in complex, fast-moving environments.
Beneficial Skills & Qualifications
- Experience covering Real Money Funds or institutional asset management clients within a wholesale credit or institutional banking context.
- Exposure to global credit risk management frameworks and cross-border institutional client portfolios.
- Established relationships with peers in global banking, risk, or product organizations, with a track record of leveraging cross-functional networks to drive outcomes.
What We Offer
At Citi, you will take on a senior leadership role within a business line that sits at the heart of the firm's wholesale credit governance framework. You will have real ownership, meaningful visibility, and the opportunity to shape credit standards across one of the world's leading financial institutions.
- A hybrid working model offering 3 days in the office and 2 days working remotely, supporting professional effectiveness and work-life balance.
- Strategic influence over credit underwriting decisions and governance practices across Citi's institutional client portfolio.
- Direct leadership of a team of analysts, with the autonomy to build team capability, shape hiring decisions, and drive professional development.
- A collaborative, performance-driven environment with strong cross-functional partnership across Banking, Risk, Markets, and Control functions.
- Access to Citi's global network and the opportunity to engage with peers, senior leaders, and clients across geographies and business lines.
- Competitive compensation and financial wellbeing support commensurate with a senior leadership role.
- Ongoing learning and development opportunities that support continued professional growth at the senior level.
Apply now to take ownership of a senior credit leadership role at Citi and make a measurable impact on how wholesale credit risk is managed across one of the world's most consequential financial institutions.
