Job Overview

Citi is looking for a Senior Java Engineering Lead to own the engineering strategy and delivery of mission-critical identity and security platforms within our Data Security Transformation Engineering organisation, part of Cloud Technology Services. In this senior leadership position, you will direct a geographically distributed engineering team building highly scalable, cloud-native platforms that underpin Citi's global technology and security objectives. This is a high-impact role at the intersection of engineering excellence, security transformation, and large-scale platform delivery.

Responsibilities

• Lead the architecture, engineering strategy, and end-to-end delivery of secure, scalable, cloud-native platforms supporting Citi's identity and security initiatives.
• Direct a geographically distributed software engineering organisation, setting clear direction and fostering a culture of accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement.
• Define technology roadmaps, architecture standards, and engineering governance frameworks that ensure long-term platform sustainability and strategic alignment.
• Establish and champion engineering best practices across software development, testing, automation, deployment, observability, and operational support.
• Partner with Product Owners, Enterprise Architects, Information Security, and Infrastructure stakeholders to translate strategic objectives into scalable technical solutions.
• Coach and develop engineers and technical leaders, building organisational capability and strengthening succession across the team.
• Identify and manage technology, delivery, and operational risks, ensuring solutions are designed and operated in line with enterprise security, compliance, and regulatory requirements.

Required Qualifications & Skills

• Significant experience leading enterprise software engineering organisations delivering large-scale distributed systems and cloud-native platforms, with deep hands-on expertise in Java 17+, Spring Boot, Spring Security, and Spring Data.
• Demonstrated ability to architect and deliver solutions using microservices, event-driven architectures, and distributed systems design, with practical experience on Kubernetes and OpenShift platforms.
• Hands-on experience designing secure platforms using OAuth2, OpenID Connect, mutual TLS (mTLS), encryption, and application security best practices.
• Track record of managing geographically distributed engineering teams, driving high performance, and developing technical talent at scale across complex, matrixed organisations.
• Experience building and operating data pipelines and event streaming solutions using Apache Kafka, with proficiency across REST and SOAP API development and OpenAPI/Swagger specification.
• Proficiency with relational and NoSQL databases including PostgreSQL, Oracle, and MongoDB, combined with strong CI/CD, Git, and DevOps delivery practices.
• Exceptional stakeholder management and communication skills, with the ability to engage credibly across technical and non-technical audiences at senior levels.

Beneficial Skills & Qualifications

• Experience delivering identity, authentication, access management, or cybersecurity platforms within Financial Services, Banking, or other highly regulated industries.
• Familiarity with Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), observability tooling such as Grafana and Prometheus, and operational resiliency practices for large-scale production environments.
• Experience leading cloud transformation and application modernisation programmes at enterprise scale.
• Exposure to Behaviour-Driven Development (BDD), test automation frameworks, and front-end technologies including ReactJS and Python scripting.
• Background supporting enterprise security and regulatory compliance programmes within complex, global organisations.
