Team/Role Overview

The role is a legal position responsible for accomplishing results through the delivery of legal support, advice and guidance across a broad range of assigned practice areas within the Operations & Technology International Legal Team which is part of the broader Citi Legal Department.

This dynamic and supportive Team of lawyers provides a wide range of commercial and technology legal advice and associated support for a range of stakeholders in different areas of the bank, including Citi’s Procurement Team (contract managers) in connection with third party supplier and outsourcing contracts for a wide spectrum of goods and services across Citi business and function areas.  The Team also provides legal advice in relation to other projects and key regulatory matters and a myriad of commercial contracts and legal documents in different sectors.

This role is suited to a proactive and adaptable commercial lawyer who enjoys working independently on a wide range of legal initiatives but who also has experience supporting other lawyers and colleagues on projects, acting as a team player.

What you’ll do

  • Oversee assigned legal activities in the Team, which provides legal counsel and support in relation to a broad range of commercial contracts, complex outsourcing negotiations, technology law, data protection law and regulation.
  • Work both independently and with others in the Team, and provide legal coverage on strategic projects across different Citi business and legal practice areas.
  • Help devise the legal strategy and work to ensure delivery.
  • Provide legal advisory services to stakeholders and apply a comprehensive understanding to your multiple assigned areas, acting as a legal subject matter expert (SME).
  • Engage and supervise external counsel, where required, and resolve complex issues.
  • Ensure that you effectively manage the relationship with your internal stakeholders and clients and your personal capacity to meet business needs and ensure efficient delivery of legal services as part of a busy commercial lawyer role.
  • Continuously stay informed of regulatory changes, internal policy changes and developments in the law.
  • Demonstrate a willingness to upskill into new practice areas and take ownership to ensure legal service is delivered.

What we’ll need from you

  • Commercial lawyer with relevant legal experience. Exceptional candidates who do not meet all criteria may still be considered.
  • Good standing to practice law in the UK.
  • Banking/financial industry experience or experience from working with a law firm or in-house legal function is beneficial.
  • An understanding of applicable EU and UK legal and regulatory obligations (including an in-depth working knowledge of Data Protection law, regulatory outsourcing and operational resilience requirements) applicable to the financial services sector in the context of general commercial contracting and processes is particularly useful.
  • Proven analytical and organizational skills. Ability to sense and manage the emergence of risk and navigate stakeholders through that is key.
  • Confidence in negotiation of a wide range of differing types of commercial contracts and ability to juggle competing priorities.
  • Strong technical legal drafting skills.
  • Consistently demonstrate clear and concise written and verbal communication.
  • Strong team player, who is also able to work independently.
