As part of Citi’s global Services Legal team, the Lead Counsel II is a senior level position responsible for providing legal support, advice and guidance to the Citi Services business.

Within the Treasury and Trade Solutions (TTS) business under Services is Citi’s global Payments business, which enables our clients to make and receive payments globally to support their commercial and treasury needs.  The Global Payments business primarily supports large corporate clients, banks, payment intermediaries and public sector customers with their payments and collections needs.

Reporting to the Legal Senior Group Manager, Services, Payments, the Lead Counsel II will provide legal support to the Payments business’s product areas, including new product development initiatives, at both the global and U.S. country level.

In this role, you will interact with stakeholders across Citi’s global network, including product managers, risk and compliance functions and counsel around the world.  You will be expected to develop expertise and a strong understanding of the Payments business.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide legal support to the TTS business, with a focus on Payments products and services, coordinating with different business teams and compliance risk and control functions to advise on legal matters impacting the business.
  • Manage day-to-day legal activities as a subject matter expert and provide advisory services to business partners.
  • Participate in business planning and development initiatives and provide thought leadership and input into strategic decisions, leveraging your knowledge of relevant law and regulation and industry practice.
  • Support the evaluation of business proposals, initiatives and client solutions, including with respect to risk and compliance matters associated with best practices, internal policy and law and regulation.
  • Coordinate with the Legal team on a global, regional and country basis, and work with outside counsel when appropriate.
  • Proactively identify, evaluate and contribute to the management of product risk in collaboration with compliance risk management functions.
  • Exercise sound and ethical legal judgment regarding business practices and the development of risk-appropriate and commercially practical business-oriented solutions.

Qualifications/experience:

  • 5-8 years of relevant industry experience, preferably with some supporting financial services products or services.
  • Banking or financial industry experience, including cash management or payments, and associated law and regulation.
  • Experience with eCommerce or Banking-as-a-Service offerings, or supporting FinTech, platform services or marketplaces.
  • Knowledge of regulations impacting these players (licensing, AML requirements, client money/safeguarding considerations) is preferred.
  • Experience providing successful legal counsel on complex financial services, Banking-as-a-Service, Software-as-a-Service offering client deals.
  • Preferred:  Knowledge of card acquiring and card networks (Visa and Mastercard), including advising on card network rules, is preferred.
  • Preferred:  Knowledge of international laws, regulations and practices associated with banking.
  • Effective communication and negotiation skills and ability to build and maintain trusted relationships.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational and relationship management skills.
  • Proven ability to apply sound judgement while managing assignments in a demanding, fast-paced environment.
  • Bar license in good standing.

Primary Location Full Time Salary Range:

$140,640.00 - $210,960.00
