Job Overview

Job Purpose:

The Nordics Cluster Head and Sweden CCO and Banking Head (CCOBH) leads a cluster of four presence countries (Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark) and one hub-managed country (Iceland). The Nordics Cluster Head and Sweden CCOBH should have a proven deep understanding of the Swedish and Nordics market, and will work together with all other local Citi executives to ensure the protection and growth of Citi’s Nordics franchises. The role should have proven existing customer relationships and access to C-Suite, and proven ability to drive growth by implementing a focused, client-centric strategy to optimize the business opportunities for the Cluster.

In addition, it presents a single, coordinated face to the local marketplace including government, regulators, clients, media, community and employees. The Nordics Cluster Head and Sweden CCOBH combines the complex challenges of balancing stewardship with dynamic franchise leadership and fulfilling the expectations of our regulators.  The Nordics Cluster Head and Sweden CCOBH  is responsible for leveraging resources so that Citi’s franchise in the Cluster grows appropriately. This role is critical to Citi’s success and is expected to lead the cluster and drive the business strategy in partnership with businesses and functions in a way that helps Citi achieve its goals.  

The Nordics Cluster Head and Sweden CCOBH also plays the important role of serving as Cluster lead for the Citibank Europe Plc legal entity.  This person will ensure appropriate CEP Branch governance in Sweden and leadership across the Cluster.   It reports to the Europe Cluster and Banking Head and Citibank Europe Plc (CEP) CEO.  This role is a key member to the Europe Leadership team and participates as needed in CEP governance fora.

This Senior Management appointment will be required to comply with the relevant requirements of the Central Bank of Ireland (CBI) Fitness and Probity Standards as the role is categorised as a Pre-Approved Control Function (PCF).  Regulatory (CBI and ECB) and CEP Board Approval will be required before the Company makes this appointment.

This Role is a “Controlled Function” Role as defined by the Central Bank of Ireland Reform Act 2010 and Principal Regulations 2011, and amending Regulations 2014, 2015.

Country/cluster context and Job background:

Citi has had a presence in the Nordics for over 50 years and is the largest Nordic Franchise of all international banks. The Nordic Cluster has a headcount of about 150 people.

Key Responsibilities:

The Nordics Cluster Head and Sweden CCOBH will be responsible for developing the strategic direction of the franchise and for implementing the processes and procedures that enable the cluster’s businesses to thrive and to assure compliance with corporate standards and regulations, as well as adherence to the laws that dictate how we do business in Cluster.

They will be expected to demonstrate:

  • Relationship management with clients, government officials, regulators, staff, employees, media and the public that engenders a high level of trust and candour to support the development and environment favourable to Citi’s market position and growth.
  • Responsible for own client coverage, C-suite access and ability to grow revenues and exceed yearly performance target;
  • Judgment in understanding issues and making good decisions that support, confirm, and enhance Citi's vision;
  • Leadership that touches all parts of the franchise and provides a strong role model for others to follow;
  • Integrity that is unquestioned and forms the foundation of all business decisions;

Franchise Growth and Stewardship:

Franchise Management includes developing and executing Citi’s overall client and business strategy to achieve both short and long- term goals in the Cluster. In particular but not limited to:

  • Helping drive franchise growth and may have varying degrees of direct accountability for specific areas of the business including directly leading senior client cover;
  • Escalating any risk and franchise-related issues to the Europe Cluster Head, CEP management, International Franchise Management (IFM), and other product and functional areas, as appropriate.

Franchise Governance:

The Nordics Cluster Head and Sweden CCOBH has direct responsibility for all local regulatory relationships, Cluster governance, internal controls and CEP legal vehicle governance, including:

  • Acting as the lead Cluster contact with local and European regulators, as relevant, and other host government officials for all businesses;
  • Ensuring compliance with all laws, regulations, and Citi policies, including ethical standards and business practices;
  • Establishing and leading Cluster and Sweden governance committees.

Operational Risk:

The Nordics Cluster Head and Sweden CCOBH is accountable for the protection of Citi’s people, franchise, reputation and premises in country, including:

  • Responsibility for crisis management, including decision making, escalation, and communications;
  • Ensuring the country Continuity of Business Plan (COB) is current and vibran
  • Protecting the Citi Franchise and Reputation;
  • Hosting Cluster and Country Management governance;
  • Regulatory Relationship Engagement;
  • Senior Client Relationship Management;
  • CEP Legal Vehicle Management and oversight;
  • Controls: Risk, Compliance, Legal, Audit;
  • Local Community, Association and Media engagement;
  • Coordinated Leadership – a single face to the local marketplace.

Qualifications, Experience and Strengths:

  • Strong academic background, Masters or MBA preferable.
  • 20+ years of banking experience.
  • Strong product knowledge across Markets, Services, Investment Banking and Lending with demonstrated analytical ability.
  • In-depth understanding of banking products – loans / debts (short and long-term), cash management, trade products; corporate and structured finance; DCM; derivatives products.
  • Strong knowledge of investment banking offerings (advisory, equity).
  • In-depth understanding of compliance issues, global and local regulatory requirements.
  • Experience in working with and within a matrix organization and cross-functional teams.
  • In-depth industry knowledge.
  • Proven existing customer relationships.
  • Proven track record of senior relationships.
  • Experience in people management.
  • Demonstrated ability to balance between internal management and external client time.
  • Demonstrated understanding of regional compliance issues and regulatory requirements.
  • Consistently demonstrate clear and concise written and verbal communication.
  • Demonstrates ability to partner well, draw consensus quickly and act decisively, especially within a challenging and cost-constrained environment.
