Job Overview
The Senior Attorney Export Control and Anti-Boycott Legal Director is a senior level position responsible for serving as strategic business partner and subject matter expert by providing Citi businesses and functions with legal counsel and thought leadership on all matters related to export controls and anti-boycott laws and regulations. The overall objective of this role is to provide legal support, advice, and guidance across a broad range of practice areas.
This role provides guidance on novel and complex export control and anti-boycott legal issues and contributes to the execution of the global export control and anti-boycott legal strategy that further enables business innovation and growth in fulfillment of Citi’s mission. This role requires a solid conceptual / practical grounding in the laws and regulations for the geographies in which we operate.
Responsibilities:
- Responsible for providing Citi businesses and functions with legal counsel; supporting strategic initiatives and product/service launches, providing subject matter expertise and interpretations of relevant laws, rules, regulations, and industry practices, and advising business management/leadership on all manner of legal matters related to export control and anti-boycott laws and regulations
- Provide advisory services in respect of export control and anti-boycott related business decisions by applying institutional knowledge against industry standard, widely accepted business practices, laws, rules, and regulatory guidelines; identifying when to escalate when necessary
- Collaborate across internal lines of business and control/support functions to achieve coordinated and efficient outcomes on matters related to export control and anti-boycott laws and regulations; coordinate closely with legal peers aligned to associated businesses
- Accomplish results by leveraging networks/connections, colleagues, and peers at competing institutions
- Lead workstreams to analyze key implications of emerging and existing laws that impact the geography
- Serve as business partner and advisor to business stakeholders and functional partners (e.g., Risk, Compliance) by participating in planning and development initiatives; contribute to business objectives by using knowledge of industry, laws, and regulations
- Actively participate in various risk review and control forums while demonstrating keen awareness of issues that could cause financial, reputational, or legal consequences
- Proactively identify, evaluate, and contribute to the appropriate management of legal, regulatory, and reputational risk by collaborating with ICRM & Risk, following relevant legal developments, participating in internal projects, and performing other related tasks
- Manage day-to-day legal activities as a subject matter expert in area of export control and anti-boycott laws and regulations, providing senior advisory services to business partners
- Advise in complex negotiations with vendors, customers, partners, and other parties, escalating when necessary
- Appropriately assess risk when business decisions are made, demonstrating particular consideration for the firm's reputation and safeguarding Citigroup, its clients and assets, by driving compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations, adhering to Policy, applying sound ethical judgment regarding personal behavior, conduct and business practices, and escalating, managing and reporting control issues with transparency, as well as effectively supervise the activity of others and create accountability with those who fail to maintain these standards
Qualifications:
- 8-10+ years of financial crimes legal, or other comparable experience, with some experience working in an in-house legal role in financial services preferred
- Excellent leadership, interpersonal, organizational and relationship management skills
- Experience in working with regulators/regulatory bodies is preferred
- Proven ability to apply sound judgement while managing multiple assignments simultaneously in a demanding, fast-paced environment
- Experience in developing policies and procedures designed to ensure compliance with dynamic and fast-moving laws and regulations
- Experience with complex deals, demonstrated ability to analyze issues and develop recommendations
- Effective communication and negotiation skills and ability to build and maintain trusted relationships
- Bar license in good standing to practice law

Primary Location Full Time Salary Range:
$170,000.00 - $300,000.00
