Job Overview
As an AVP, SQL & ETL Developer, you will play a critical role in the design, development, optimization, and maintenance of robust and scalable data solutions. This position requires deep expertise in SQL, database systems, and Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) processes, coupled with an understanding of data warehousing principles.Crucially, you must possess strong domain knowledge in banking, specifically related to liquidity management, stress modeling, and markets data, to effectively translate complex business requirements into data solutions.Based in Canada, this role will contribute to key data initiatives, ensuring data quality, availability, and integrity to support critical business operations and analytical needs. You will be expected to lead specific projects, mentor junior developers, and engage with stakeholders to deliver high-quality data solutions within the financial domain.
Key Responsibilities
SQL Development & Optimization:
Design, develop, and optimize complex SQL queries, stored procedures, functions, and views for data extraction, transformation, and loading.
Analyze and tune database performance (e.g., query optimization, indexing strategies) to ensure efficient data processing and retrieval.
Implement data integrity checks and validation rules within SQL scripts.
Develop and maintain database schemas and data models in collaboration with data architects.
ETL Solution Design & Development:
Lead the design, development, and implementation of robust, scalable, and automated ETL processes using various ETL tools (e.g., Informatica PowerCenter, SSIS, DataStage, Talend, or cloud-native ETL services).
Develop and maintain data pipelines for ingesting data from diverse sources (e.g., relational databases, flat files, APIs, cloud storage) into target data warehouses or data marts.
Implement error handling, logging, and monitoring mechanisms within ETL workflows.
Ensure data quality and consistency throughout the ETL process.
Data Warehousing & Data Management:
Apply strong understanding of data warehousing concepts (e.g., Kimball, Inmon methodologies), dimensional modeling, and OLAP principles.
Work closely with data architects and business analysts to translate business requirements into technical data solutions.
Manage and maintain data dictionaries and data lineage documentation.
Project Leadership & Mentorship:
Lead small to medium-sized data development projects from inception to completion, including planning, execution, and deployment.
Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior developers on SQL, ETL best practices, and troubleshooting.
Participate in code reviews to ensure adherence to development standards and quality.
Troubleshooting & Support:
Diagnose and resolve complex data-related issues, including data discrepancies, performance bottlenecks, and ETL job failures.
Provide production support for data solutions, ensuring high availability and reliability.
Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement:
Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams including business users, data analysts, data scientists, architects, and IT operations.
Translate business requirements into technical specifications for data solutions.
Communicate project status, challenges, and solutions clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders
Education:
Bachelor’s degree/University degree or equivalent experience

5+ years of progressive experiencein SQL development and ETL design/implementation.
Must have significant experience in the banking or financial services domain.
Demonstrated strong domain knowledge in one or more of the following areas: Liquidity Management, Stress Modeling, and Markets Data (e.g., trading data, market risk data).
Proven experience in leading data projects and/or mentoring junior team members.
Experience working with large datasets and complex enterprise data architectures.
Technical Proficiency:
Expert-level proficiency in SQL(e.g., T-SQL, PL/SQL, PostgreSQL, MySQL) with strong experience in query optimization, stored procedures, functions, and triggers.
Extensive experience with at least one major ETL toolsuch as Informatica PowerCenter, Microsoft SSIS, IBM DataStage, Talend, or equivalent cloud-native ETL services (e.g., AWS Glue, Azure Data Factory, GCP Dataflow/Cloud Data Fusion).
Strong understanding ofdata warehousing conceptsanddimensional modeling.
Experience with BigData technologies is good to have
Experience with database management systems (e.g., SQL Server, Oracle, DB2, PostgreSQL).
Familiarity with scripting languages (e.g., Python, PowerShell) for automation is a strong plus.
Knowledge of version control systems (e.g., Git) and SDLC methodologies (Agile/Scrum).
Experience with job scheduling tools (e.g., Autosys, Control-M) is an asset.
Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and their data services is a plus.
Skills & Competencies:
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with meticulous attention to detail.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of interacting effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Ability to translate complex banking domain requirements into effective data solutions.
Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and manage multiple projects concurrently in a fast-paced environment.
Proactive attitude with a strong commitment to quality and continuous improvement.
