Job Overview
The MD, Head of Business & Professional Services ( B&PS) role is responsible for leading a group of talented bankers (and leaders) to deliver on the strategy for the Industry sector. The role requires strong leadership acumen alongside the ability to lead senior client relationships up to c-suite level.
The role forms part of the UK senior leadership team and is also a key component of the Global Industry team. An In-depth understanding of how the B&PS sub industries work is an integral part of the role, as is understanding how best to prioritise commercial focus areas in order to maximise team growth and gain market share.
A good understanding of the industry, direct competitors' products and services, is also necessary in order to contribute to the commercial objectives of the business. The role requires a thorough understanding of the strategic direction of the function within the relevant part of the business, combined with a solid conceptual/practical grounding in both the function and/or area of expertise and related subject areas.
Excellent communication skills are required in order to negotiate internally, often at a senior level. Strong external communication and negotiation skills will also be necessary. The role is accountable for end results, budgeting, planning, policy formulation and contribution to future strategy. The impact of the role reflects the size of the team managed, strategic influence on the business and interaction with other functions or businesses.
The role has full management responsibility for multiple teams, including a regional team in the North of England, alongside a virtual team focused on financial sponsors and more complex leveraged lending is also embedded within the role. Strong people management skills are a necessity.
The role is a direct report to the Head of the UK Commercial banking, with responsibilities often spanning across broader areas (cross discipline) of the UK franchise as the team pursues significant growth.
Responsibilities:
- Drive innovation on the solutions we provide clients through partnerships with product specialists and subject matter experts, while structuring deals that balance risk and reward.
- Execution of strategic initiatives launched centrally at all levels (Group, Banking, CCB).
- Oversee the credit relationship of the client, coordinating and supervising the entire process, ensuring the proper application of policies and institutional processes.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and Citi's policies / guidelines at all times.
- This people leadership role is responsible for leading a team of Relationship Managers (RMs) and aspiring leaders. The role holder needs to invest time into developing and coaching people.
- Responsible for calling on clients to deepen relationships and proactively owning, responding to and anticipating future needs, roadblocks or risks, in addition to identifying new areas for growth in order to deepen wallet share.
- Sharp focus on new business, focuses on how best to develop a competitive strategy to position Citi in new relationships and grow the overall size of the business. Once on-boarded it will be important to ensure the relationship deepens across multiple products and geographies to maximise the full potential of Citi.
- Attracting, retaining and motivating a team, along with responsibility for managing a budget and meeting team sales goals.
- Appropriately assess risk when business decisions are made, demonstrating particular consideration for the firm's reputation and safeguarding Citigroup, its clients and assets, by driving compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations, adhering to Policy, applying sound ethical judgment regarding personal behavior, conduct and business practices, and escalating, managing and reporting control issues with transparency, as well as effectively supervise the activity of others and create accountability with those who fail to maintain these standards.
Qualifications:
- 20+ years of experience.
- In-depth knowledge of all aspects of commercial banking; commercial credit knowledge and an ability to quickly learn new products and services.
- Possesses sound judgment and is creative in providing credit/deposit solutions to bank clients.
- Significant experience with commercial credit decision making authority, with experience in complex capital structures and cross border transactions.
- Minimum intermediate level credit skills with the capability to demonstrate advanced level credit skills to be appointed a senior credit officer.
- Ability to work effectively in team setting, helping to build and contribute to strategy.
- Comfortable working in a large, matrix environment.
- Able to effectively interact with a variety of internal and external constituencies.
- Proven track record of successfully managing and leading teams through complex change; a reputation for retaining, attracting and developing talent.
- Proven leadership ability with excellent interpersonal communication skills.
- Must be able to express a sound opinion, able to agreeably present another viewpoint.
- Full management responsibility of a team, which may include management of people, budget and planning, to include duties such as performance evaluation, compensation, hiring, disciplinary and terminations and may include budget approval.
- Must have a sharp business development focus and demonstrate innovative approaches.
- Able to quickly adapt priorities based on the latest data insights.
- A flexible mindset and able to shift gear and move to different focus areas at pace. Agile leadership.
Education:
- Bachelor’s/University degree, Masters degree/Accountancy background preferred and managerial experience.
Candidates applying for this role must be aware that it is a Certified Role, subject to the FCA and PRA Certification Regime.
The Certification Regime is one element of the Individual Accountability Regime which came into effect on 7 March 2016.
Under the Certification Regime, Citi UK regulated entities (Citi entities) must ensure that employees working in certain roles categorised as specified significant harm functions (Certified Roles) are assessed as fit and proper to carry out their role.
Under the guidance provided by the FCA and PRA, firms should have regard to the following when assessing fitness and propriety:
- Honesty, integrity and reputation
- Financial soundness
- Competence and capability
In order to comply with the requirements of the Certification Regime, Citi entities must take reasonable care to ensure that an employee does not perform a Certified Role without first being certified as Fit and Proper. For this reason, you will be assessed for this role against the Fit and Proper requirements, as described above.
This assessment will be carried out through extensive interviews, self-disclosures, permitted criminal record checks, regulated reference checks, credit checks and other background screening checks.
