Job Overview

We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Product Lead Engineer to join our Web App Hosting Middleware engineering team. In this pivotal role, you will combine deep technical expertise with product leadership to drive the strategic direction, design, and implementation of our web application hosting solutions. You will be instrumental in evolving our platform, with a particular focus on enhancing our IBM WebSphere Liberty or Tomcat product engineering capabilities within container orchestration environments like OpenShift and Kubernetes.

The ideal candidate will be a hands-on engineer who can also define roadmaps, mentor junior engineers, and collaborate closely with product management, operations, and development teams to deliver cutting-edge solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Technical Leadership: Lead the design, development, and implementation of robust, scalable, and secure web application hosting middleware solutions, with a strong emphasis on Tomcat.

  • Product Strategy: Collaborate with product management to define the product vision, strategy, and roadmap for our web app hosting platform, ensuring alignment with overall enterprise goals and developer needs.

  • Platform Modernization: Drive the adoption and integration of modern cloud-native technologies, particularly OpenShift and Kubernetes, to optimize our web application deployment and management strategies.

  • Architectural Guidance: Provide architectural oversight and technical guidance for the team, ensuring best practices in system design, performance, reliability, and security.

  • Engineering Excellence: Champion engineering best practices, including code quality, testing, CI/CD, and operational excellence, to ensure the delivery of high-quality, maintainable software.

  • Troubleshooting & Support: Act as a subject matter expert for complex technical issues related to web application middleware, providing advanced troubleshooting and resolution support.

  • Mentorship & Growth: Mentor and guide junior and mid-level engineers, fostering a culture of continuous learning, innovation, and technical growth within the team.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with application development teams, infrastructure teams, and security teams to understand requirements, integrate solutions, and provide excellent platform services.

  • Documentation: Create and maintain comprehensive technical documentation, standards, and best practices for the web app hosting platform.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.

  • 8+ years of experience in software engineering, with at least 3 years in a technical leadership or principal engineer role.

  • Deep expertise in Tomcat or WebSphere Liberty product engineering, including configuration, tuning, performance optimization, and troubleshooting.

  • Extensive hands-on experience with containerization technologies, specifically Docker and Kubernetes.

  • Proven experience working with OpenShift for deploying and managing containerized applications.

  • Strong proficiency in at least one modern programming language (e.g., Java, Go, Python).

  • Solid understanding of web application architecture, microservices, and API design principles.

  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices.

  • Excellent problem-solving skills, with a track record of tackling complex technical challenges.

  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate across diverse teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with other application servers or web servers (e.g., JBoss, WebSphere, Nginx, Apache HTTP Server).

  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP).

  • Experience with service mesh technologies

  • Knowledge of observability tools (monitoring, logging, tracing - e.g., Prometheus, Grafana, Splunk).

  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code tools (e.g., Terraform, Ansible, YAML).

  • Prior experience in the financial services industry is preferred.
