Job Description: Accounts Payable Supervisor
Job Summary
The Accounts Payable Supervisor leads and supervises a medium-sized operational/administrative team responsible for accounts payable processes. This role requires a deep understanding of accounting principles, advanced knowledge of data analysis tools, and comprehensive understanding of the entire procure-to-pay cycle within an organization. The supervisor will drive process efficiencies, foster collaboration across departments, and ensure accurate and timely processing of accounts payable, contributing directly to the financial health and operational excellence of the company. The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership skills, a results-oriented mindset, empathy, and a commitment to continuous improvement.
Responsibilities
- Team Leadership & Supervision:
- Supervises and manages an accounts payable unit or medium-sized team, ensuring daily tasks and responsibilities are executed efficiently.
- Provides full supervisory responsibilities, including performance evaluation, compensation recommendations, hiring, disciplinary actions, and terminations.
- Responsible for training and onboarding new team members, fostering a supportive and high-performing environment.
- Has the ability to operate with a limited level of direct supervision, exercising independence of judgment and autonomy.
- Ability to manage teams effectively, promoting team development and accountability.
- Demonstrable experience in managing and operating within a Shared Services model, including process optimization, efficient service delivery, and interdepartmental collaboration.
- Proven track record in developing and fostering the professional growth of team members through mentoring, coaching, individual development plans, and training.
- Accounts Payable Expertise & Process Improvement:
- Applies advanced analytical skills and knowledge of data analysis tools and methodologies as they pertain to Accounts Payable operations.
- Possesses a comprehensive understanding of procedures and concepts within accounts payable and a solid grasp of how this function integrates with other departments to achieve overall organizational objectives.
- Proactively identifies opportunities to improve process efficiencies within the accounts payable cycle and implements solutions to support unit objectives and broader organizational goals.
- Influences accounting operations decisions through expert advice, counsel, and facilitating services, driving results through joint accountability for volume, quality, and timeliness of end results.
- Strategic Impact & Problem Solving:
- Acts as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for accounts payable to senior stakeholders and other cross-functional team members, providing insights and guidance.
- Typically deals with variable issues that have a broader business impact, demonstrating a strong ability to solve complex problems within the accounts payable domain.
- Influences decisions through advice, counsel, facilitating services to others or through joint accountability for volume, quality and timeliness of end results.
- Risk Management & Compliance:
- Appropriately assesses risk when business decisions are made, demonstrating particular consideration for the firm's reputation and safeguarding company assets.
- Drives compliance with applicable laws, rules, and regulations, adhering to company policies.
- Applies sound ethical judgment regarding personal behavior, conduct, and business practices.
- Effectively supervises the activity of others and creates accountability, ensuring adherence to established standards and escalating control issues with transparency.
- Interpersonal & Communication Skills:
- Developed communication and diplomacy skills are required to exchange potentially complex/sensitive information effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
- Possesses empathy and a collaborative mindset, fostering positive working relationships with various departments to achieve shared goals.
Qualifications
- Experience: 2-5 years of progressive experience in an accounting role, with a minimum of 2 years in a supervisory or management capacity, preferably within Accounts Payable.
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
- Languages: Advanced English (Portuguese is a plus)
