Job Overview

The Chief Economist manages multiple teams through other managers. In-depth understanding of how own sub-function contributes to achieving the objectives of the function. A good understanding of the industry, direct competitors' products and services, is also necessary in order to contribute to the commercial objectives of the business. Requires thorough understanding of strategic direction of the function within the relevant part of the business, combined with a solid conceptual/practical grounding in both the function and/or area of expertise and related subject areas. Excellent communication skills required in order to negotiate internally, often at a senior level. Some external communication/negotiation may be necessary. Responsible for executing functional strategy in area managed. Determines approach to implementing functional strategy. Accountable for end results, budgeting, planning, policy formulation and contribution to future strategy of the area(s). Impact reflects size of team managed, strategic influence on the business and interaction with other functions or businesses. Full management responsibility for multiple teams, including management of people, budget and planning, to include duties such as performance evaluation, compensation, hiring, disciplinary actions and terminations and budget approval. May be doing involved or responsible for diverse (cross-discipline) activities.

Responsibilities:

  • To produce frequent and insightful written analysis of a country, region or global with forecasts relating to the underlying factors that drive currency, bond and equity markets; to understand/explain policy events to Citi’s clients both external and internal
  • Ability to lead teams

  • Engage in Citi’s broader corporate objectives, such as recruitment and training of junior analysts and associates
  • Work in close partnership with control functions such as Legal, Compliance, Market and Credit Risk, Audit, Finance in order to ensure appropriate governance and control infrastructure
  • Build a culture of responsible finance, good governance and supervision, expense discipline and ethics
  • Appropriately assess risk/reward of transactions when making business decisions; and ensure that all team members understand the need to do the same, demonstrating proper consideration for the firm’s reputation
  • Be familiar with and adhere to Citi’s Code of Conduct and the Plan of Supervision for Global Markets and Securities Services; and ensure that all team members understand the need to do the same
  • Adhere to all policies and procedures as defined by your role which will be communicated to you
  • Obtain and maintain all registrations/licenses which are required for your role, within the appropriate timeframe
  • Appropriately assess risk when business decisions are made, demonstrating particular consideration for the firm's reputation and safeguarding Citigroup, its clients and assets, by driving compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations, adhering to Policy, applying sound ethical judgment regarding personal behavior, conduct and business practices, and escalating, managing and reporting control issues with transparency, as well as effectively supervise the activity of others and create accountability with those who fail to maintain these standards.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s/University degree, Master’s degree preferred and managerial experience

Role Overview

Responsible for overseeing the full Economic Research area, ensuring the highest quality standards across all economic studies while fostering a culture of innovation and supporting the professional development of the team. This role acts as a key representative of the institution before strategic stakeholders, including large corporations, private banking clients, economic analysts, investors, the press, financial authorities, and senior bank management.

The economic analysis produced by this position is a critical input for financial projections across multiple business levels and product lines and is frequently cited in national and international media. The role regularly presents economic and political analysis to the CEO of Banamex, the Board of Directors, and senior leadership forums (town halls), as well as in meetings with customers and key opinion leaders, where these insights are highly influential.

Beyond adapting the organization to environmental risks and opportunities, this position is fully accountable for providing mandatory inputs, scenario analyses, and strategic solutions to address changes that may impact the institution as a whole.

Discipline Knowledge and Expertise

Economist with deep expertise in macroeconomic, political, and social analysis of the global economy, with particular focus on the Mexican economy. The role maintains close relationships with large corporations, private banking clients, investors, members of the press, economic analysts, national financial authorities, and Banamex’s senior management, including business and risk areas.

Recognized expert in economic analysis and in the effective communication of insights, requiring strong public speaking abilities and advanced writing skills for publications and external communications.

A solid understanding of economic theory, global and local financial and banking markets, as well as the political and social environment, is essential. This position is internally and externally recognized as a subject matter expert who influences decision-making not only within the organization but also beyond the business itself.

Strategic Representation and Leadership

Acts as an institutional representative before strategic stakeholders to support critical objectives—such as a successful IPO—engaging with large corporations, private banking clients, economic analysts, investors, the media, financial authorities, and senior bank leadership.

Exceptional communication skills are required to negotiate effectively at senior levels, both internally and externally. Strong analytical, written, and verbal communication capabilities are mandatory to enhance the institution’s reputation while acting as its spokesperson.

This position holds full responsibility for all economic publications and official economic analysis issued on behalf of Banamex. These analyses are frequently referenced by the media and are presented regularly to the CEO, the Board of Directors, senior leadership meetings, customers, and influential opinion leaders.
