Franchise and Business Overview

Citi’s presence in Japan dates to 1902 and our first branch in Yokohama.  Today, Citi has a large wholesale banking presence in the country, with over 1,300 staff working in Tokyo and Okinawa. Citi brings local expertise and global resources to clients, and Japan is one of the most important markets for Citigroup globally.  

Corporate Banking provides the central relationship contact point for clients. Corporate bankers lead the client relationship management, account strategy and planning, credit sponsorship, and compliance actions. Corporate Bankers provide clients with solutions in Japan and around our 95-country network. These include lending, trade and export finance, debt and equity capital markets, derivatives and FX, investment solutions, cash management, custody services and agencies, and strategic advisory. Corporate bankers leverage Citi’s global resources and intelligence to deliver Citi’s full capabilities to our clients and help solve our clients’ financial challenges. The Corporate Banking team works closely with specialists in Investment Banking, Markets, Treasury & Trade Services, and Securities Services to develop and deliver solutions to clients. Transaction and portfolio management is supported by independent credit management (ICM), Capital Management, Risk Management, and independent compliance teams.

Financial Institutions Group (FIG) is the industry segment generating the largest share of total client revenues for Citi.  The client portfolio consists of a broad range of names across Japanese banks, life and property & casualty insurance companies, asset managers and non-bank financial institution (NBFI) clients. The team also serves subsidiaries of foreign-headquartered FIG clients operating in Japan.

Role description:

The Associate Banker of Financial Institutions, Corporate Banking for Japan will be Citi’s client relationship representative and be support provider to Senior Bankers of the team for the financial industry sector. When developing and executing strategies, the successful candidate will need to balance the revenue growth of the franchise with strong credit and compliance controls. Knowledge of the client segment, combined with trusted relationships will enable the successful candidate to drive an industry growth plan to be delivered through product and franchise partners in Japan and around the world.

This position will drive the client coverage strategy working continuously to align client account plans with all Citi partners in products, services, ICM, Risk, Capital Management, and audit functions. The role reports directly to the Japan Financial Institutions Head and has a matrix report to a representative in Business Coordination Unit in Corporate Banking.

Skills and Requirements:

The ideal candidate will demonstrate the following characteristics:

  • Experience as a Corporate Banking banker.  Proven ability to involve a large, complexbusiness.
  • Ability to synthesize complex challenges and build consensus quickly across many partners (“1-Citi mindset”). Can act decisively within a competitive and time-constrained operating environment.  
  • Proven ability to build and maintain client relationships. Knowledge of the financial institutions sector.
  • Transaction origination and execution track record.
  • Knowledge of the full suite of Markets, Services and Banking products. Possesses a cross-sell mindset, and can leverage Citi’s products, services, and global network.
  • Demonstrates skill of credit risk management.   
  • Active engagement of controls and compliance, including time-sensitive processes such as KYC and AML.  
  • Ability to work across a diverse and multi-country partners and stakeholders.
  • Fluency in Japanese and English.  
  • Japan Securities Dealers Association (JSDA) Class 1 and 2 certifications.

Required Language Level

  • Japanese – Native (read, write, speak)
  • English - Advanced Level (read, write, speak)

Required Education Level

  • Bachelor's Degree or higher
