Job Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Mainframe Developer to join our IT team. The successful candidate will be responsible for the design, development, testing, and maintenance of critical business applications running on mainframe systems. This role requires strong analytical skills, a deep understanding of mainframe technologies, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and Development:Design, develop, and implement new mainframe applications and enhancements to existing systems using COBOL, JCL, DB2, CICS, and other relevant mainframe technologies.
  • Maintenance and Support:Provide ongoing maintenance, support, and troubleshooting for production mainframe applications, including debugging, performance tuning, and incident resolution.
  • Analysis and Requirements:Work closely with business analysts and stakeholders to gather and understand business requirements, translating them into technical specifications and viable mainframe solutions.
  • Testing:Conduct comprehensive unit, integration, and system testing to ensure the quality, reliability, and performance of mainframe applications.
  • Documentation:Create and maintain detailed technical documentation, including design specifications, program flows, and operational procedures.
  • Collaboration:Collaborate with other development teams, infrastructure teams, and operations teams to ensure seamless integration and deployment of mainframe solutions.
  • Code Review:Participate in code reviews to ensure adherence to coding standards, best practices, and system architecture.
  • Problem Solving:Analyze and resolve complex technical issues, often under time pressure, ensuring minimal impact on business operations.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field.

Experience

  • 3+ years of professional experience in mainframe application development.

Technical Skills

  • Programming Languages:Proficient in COBOL, JCL, REXX, PL/I.
  • Databases:Strong experience with DB2, IMS DB.
  • Transaction Managers:Expertise in CICS, IMS DC.
  • Utilities & Tools:Familiarity with VSAM, TSO/ISPF, Endevor (or similar SCM), File Manager, Debuggers.
  • Operating Systems:In-depth knowledge of z/OS.
  • Concepts:Understanding of batch processing, online transaction processing, and data transfer protocols.
  • Version Control:Experience with mainframe source code management tools.

Soft Skills

  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical abilities.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Detail-oriented and highly organized.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Agile development methodologies.
  • Knowledge of modernizing mainframe applications or integrating mainframe systems with distributed platforms.
  • Familiarity with other mainframe tools and utilities (e.g., MQ Series, Syncsort).

Expertise in Mainframe Coding preferred - including Cobol/CICS, JCL, VSAM and ISPF.
