Job Overview

The Digital S/W Engineer Principal is a strategic professional who closely follows latest trends in own field and adapts them for application within own job and the business. Recognized subject matter expert within one area. Strong commercial awareness is a necessity. Is an acknowledged authority both within and outside area of expertise. Typically a small number of people within the business that provide the same level of expertise. Excellent communication skills required in order to negotiate internally, often at a senior level. Some external communication is typically required. Provides advanced judgment and conducts in-depth quantitative or qualitative analysis to solve problems and develop new, innovative solutions. Required to think beyond existing solutions, assumptions or current knowledge of sophisticated areas. Significant impact on a function and/or the business through making decisions that determine technical approaches and strategies for the area.

Responsibilities:

• Lead the design and development of large-scale, cloud-native systems using microservices architecture, containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), and serverless technologies.

• Design, Architect, implement, and maintain highly scalable and reliable cloud infrastructures across AWS, Azure, and GCP.

• Collaborate with development teams to build and deploy event-driven architectures utilizing technologies like Apache Kafka, AWS Lambda, Apache Spark, and Snowflake for real-time data processing.

• Oversee data platform modernization, including data lake implementation, data governance frameworks, and advanced analytics capabilities using tools like Apache Iceberg, Snowflake, and Databricks.

• Lead efforts to migrate legacy systems to cloud-based platforms, ensuring seamless transitions, cost optimization, and improved performance.

• Implement robust security and compliance standards, adhering to regulatory frameworks such as GDPR, HIPAA, and industry-specific guidelines.

• Provide technical leadership, mentoring, and guidance to engineering teams, helping them develop innovative solutions while ensuring alignment with architectural best practices.

• Collaborate closely with stakeholders to understand business goals and deliver technical solutions that meet strategic objectives.

• Drive automation efforts in cloud infrastructure deployment using Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools like Terraform, AWS CloudFormation, and Azure Resource Manager.

• Contribute to brown bags, external publications, user-group leadership, speaking opportunities at industry conferences while raising Citi’s GCT profile and more in the industry,

• In addition to a comprehensive understanding of the business domain, the systems, and products, maintain strong knowledge of emerging technologies and best practices. Help to drive cross-team solutions, anticipating and addressing problems ahead of the needs of the scrum teams. Regularly meet with SDE IIIs and IIs to ensure engineering and operational excellence focuses are addressing the key tactical and strategic issues.

• Appropriately assess risk when business decisions are made, demonstrating particular consideration for the firm's reputation and safeguarding Citigroup, its clients and assets, by driving compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations, adhering to Policy, applying sound ethical judgment regarding personal behavior, conduct and business practices, and escalating, managing and reporting control issues with transparency.

Qualifications:

• 12+ years of experience in software engineering and cloud architecture, with a proven track record of leading large-scale cloud transformation initiatives.

• Deep expertise in cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP), including knowledge of multi-cloud strategies, microservices architecture, and event-driven systems.

• Extensive experience in container orchestration technologies (Kubernetes, Docker) and service mesh (Istio) for microservices management.

• Strong background in data engineering and data governance technologies such as Snowflake, Delta Lake, Apache Iceberg, and Databricks.

• Proven experience with streaming technologies like Apache Kafka and real-time data processing frameworks such as Apache Spark.

• Knowledge of security and compliance frameworks, including GDPR, HIPAA, and other relevant standards.

• Demonstrated leadership in technical roles, with experience mentoring and growing engineering teams.

• Hands-on experience with infrastructure automation (Terraform, CloudFormation) and CI/CD pipeline implementations.

• Experience with regulatory frameworks and designing secure, compliant cloud infrastructures.
