The Remedial Mgmt Senior Officer I is a 2LOD remedial professional working within Special Assets International as part of the North Asia cluster, with matrix reporting to the Head of CCB Risk China.

Special Assets is a team that specializes in the risk management of the ICG classified portfolio. The exposures we manage typically exhibit a heightened probability of default at varying stages of stress or distress. SA work involves collaborating with Business and Risk partners to formulate and execute strategies that maximize the value of the SA portfolio, balancing risk, returns and recovery appropriately. For early-stage (SM) names, we undertake a diagnostic assessment of risks and provide recommendations for subsequent risk management. For portfolio management of the classified portfolio, we ensure that our exposure is appropriately tailored to the bank’s risk appetite. Depending on where we are in the credit cycle, a proportion of these names become live restructuring situations. For these, we work directly with troubled clients to develop solutions in conjunction with other creditors, equity-holders, financial and legal advisers as applicable. Transactions such as these can occur through consensual solutions that can take anywhere between 2 and 24 months or through court-administered processes.

Responsibilities of the role include:

  • Manage the classified portfolio within China across Wholesale Credit Risk
  • Apply excellent credit diagnostic techniques to identify issues, determine classification and develop/implement remedial strategy as needed
  • Complete Special Mention Assessments
  • Manage all SS/worse accounts that are Special Assets Directed and Approved or Special Assets Approved, Business Administered with 1LOD, CLM, ICM as applicable on a co-management basis. Develop and be responsible for exposure strategy and its execution.
  • Review all options to de-risk as necessary including sale of exposure as applicable
  • Interact with the obligor, review financial statements and appropriate financial analysis, negotiate any changes in documentation or terms and conditions of loan.
  • Work with VCAT as needed to conduct Enterprise Valuation above USD threshold level to assess impairment (VCAT will undertake the analysis, this role is providing credit/supervisory input) for Individually Assessed CECL reserves or write-off (NCL) as required
  • Ensure all stakeholders internally are fully informed on a timely basis, noting some situations may be fast-moving and high profile, requiring urgent and regular updates.
  • Participate in periodic reviews held by Remedial Management, Risk Management and 1LOD.
  • Over time, provide expert input on classification matters to local internal stakeholders as needed
  • Play an active role in the Special Assets team, contributing to understanding outside China of activities/trends within the country as they may be relevant to the global portfolio. Represent Special Assets in this respect on other global forums in both 1L and 2L on ad hoc basis.
  • Support local reporting and regulatory requirements. Also to be able to explain decisions/judgement to IA/FCR/Regulators as needed.
  • Work with existing member of China remedial team to form team/partnership
