The Business & Corporate Communications Sr Group Manager oversees multiple teams through other managers. In-depth understanding of how own sub-function contributes to achieving the objectives of the function. A good understanding of the industry, direct competitors' products and services, is also necessary in order to contribute to the commercial objectives of the business.  Requires thorough understanding of strategic direction of the function within the relevant part of the business, combined with a solid conceptual/practical grounding in both the function and/or area of expertise and related subject areas.  Excellent communication skills required in order to negotiate internally, often at a senior level.  Some external communication/negotiation may be necessary.  Responsible for executing functional strategy in area managed. Determines approach to implementing functional strategy. Accountable for end results, budgeting, planning, policy formulation and contribution to future strategy of the area(s).  Impact reflects size of team managed, strategic influence on the business and interaction with other functions or businesses. Full management responsibility for multiple teams, including management of people, budget and planning, to include duties such as performance evaluation, compensation, hiring, disciplinary actions and terminations and budget approval. May be doing involved or responsible for diverse (cross-discipline) activities. Typically, a direct report to a C16 role and function as an integral member of the leadership team.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage a communications team that can partner, plan and build relationships with leaders to engage in communications planning and align communication to impact adoption of new behaviors.
  • Develop strategies and processes to ensure communications in business units are aligned with and support the company’s strategic direction
  • Create and implement a comprehensive, global internal communication program which ensures employees are informed about Citi's strategy, key initiatives and progress towards those initiatives
  • Execute cohesive communications plan for regional/business line/functional partners
  • Work closely across the communications function and business leadership to assist with strategic initiatives ensuring effective communication and consistent messaging to all levels of the organization.
  • Develop strategy for existing and emerging communications channels to communicate with and engage employees across the organization including intranet, town hall meetings, video production, all-employee calls and voicemails, and written materials.
  • Ensure consistency across all communications channels.
  • Ensure that all communications are consistent and aligned closely with the firm’s objectives, playing a key role in all crisis and issue communication.
  • Integrate corporate objectives into messaging platform and drive execution.

  • Appropriately assess risk when business decisions are made, demonstrating particular consideration for the firm's reputation and safeguarding Citigroup, its clients and assets, by driving compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations, adhering to Policy, applying sound ethical judgment regarding personal behavior, conduct and business practices, and escalating, managing and reporting control issues with transparency, as well as effectively supervise the activity of others and create accountability with those who fail to maintain these standards.

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of communications and 15+ years of experience, including 8-10+ years' managerial experience
  • Strong communications (written, verbal and interpersonal) skills, including tact, diplomacy, and ability to influence senior executives
  • Integrity, maturity, dependability, a positive professional attitude
  • A team player who will implement initiatives effectively and motivate others to perform their task
  • A leader who will implement initiatives effectively and motivate others to contribute
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills
  • Experience or demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team-based environment within a heavily matrixed organization

  • Critical competencies include oral communication, written communication, project management, relationship building, results orientation and strategic orientation

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business management, communications, marketing or another related field

Head of Communications, Enterprise Services & Public Affairs and Global Legal Affairs & Compliance 

About the Team

Enterprise Services and Public Affairs (ESPA) seeks to enhance and protect the reputation of Citi, its businesses and the brand through direct and indirect communication with Citi's various stakeholders, including our colleagues. Corporate Communications is a nimble team in ESPA that covers a broad scope of responsibilities, including executive communications, public engagements, corporate reputation programs as well as communications supporting our lines of business. The nature of the work provides a dynamic environment where members of the team serve as company spokespeople to media, drive engagement with colleagues and develop external and internal digital communications for a global workforce of more than 200,000 colleagues. Within Citi, the team works with many internal partners, including senior leadership, and regularly coordinates closely with other members of the ESPA across the world.    

The Head of Communications, Enterprise Services & Public Affairs and Global Legal Affairs & Compliance (ESPA and GLAC) will manage Citi’s internal and external communications efforts for the two functions and their leaders’ executive visibility. Key groups across these functions organizations include: Sustainability & ESG, Community Investing & Development, Real Estate Services, Headquarters, Global Legal Affairs, Compliance and more. This role manages senior professionals and requires the ability to prioritize high-impact communications work in an ever-evolving landscape. Excellent communication and relationship-management skills are required in order to influence and effectively communicate with a wide range of audiences. 

Primary Responsibilities 

  • Lead a communications strategy that enhances Citi’s profile and reputation and reflects its strategic priorities 
  • Manage and oversee media relations through short-and-long-term strategies to elevate Citi and its relevant executives across financial, business, trade and consumer media outlets 
  • Oversee internal and external corporate communications including: Sustainability, Real Estate, Financial Inclusion, Legal, etc.  
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with key media outlets 
  • Mange the development and production of a variety of communications materials, including company messaging and statements, communications plans, press releases, blog posts, FAQs, and other collateral 
  • Lead a team of professionals that support key areas of work 
  • Develop talent and manage performance of team members to achieve a standard of excellence 
  • Work cross-functionally with many teams across Citi, including HR, IR, Legal, Communications, Marketing, Research, etc.  

Qualifications and Education 

  • 10+ years of relevant experience, 5+ years of managerial experience 
  • In-depth familiarity with both media relations and internal communications  
  • Experience pitching financial, business, technology, and industry publications 
  • Subject matter expertise in ESG, Sustainability and Social Impact is a priority  
  • Ability to synthesize complex concepts to create key messages that are consistent but tailored to various stakeholders 
  • Strong and prolific writing and editing skills 
  • Skills in planning, organizing, prioritizing, and executing simultaneous projects and activities 
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced corporate environment with sensitive information 
  • Takes initiative, anticipates next steps and sets high standards in all he/she does 
  • Strong relationship management skills and experience working with stakeholders cross-functionally and globally 
  • Creative, thoughtful approach to work product and regularly brings forward new ideas 
  • Experience managing third-party agency relationships 
  • Persuasive when presenting to larger groups or in regular meetings, both internally and externally 
  • Exceptional attention to detail 
  • Integrity, maturity, dependability, and a positive professional attitude
