What do you do at Citi?

My role at Citi is to assist clients with their home lending needs and collaborate with my retail bank partners to deepen our clients’ banking relationships by growing deposits.

How does your role/department impact the larger organization?

My role allows me to enhance the client experience by leveraging the global Citi brand to offer mortgage products that cater to our clients’ specific financial needs, thus allowing us the opportunity to earn their complete banking relationship and be their primary banking institution.

How did you begin a career in your field?

Prior to mortgage, I worked in the insurance industry. After working in that field for nearly six years, I crossed paths with previous coworkers that made the change to the mortgage industry. After research, I knew insurance was not my long term career path and decided to pursue mortgage. I have been very satisfied with my decision, as I feel I have made greater impacts on my clients’ financial lives, which is very rewarding for me.

What does your day-to-day job entail, and what do you like most about it?

What I like most about my day to day is that no day is exactly the same as the day before. Each day is met with either new experiences or new challenges that allow me to grow personally and professionally. Typically, my day involves outreach efforts and conversations with new prospects to grow business opportunities. With that comes periodic follow-ups with those contacts in order to begin or continue developing relationships.

What is the best part about your work environment?

The best part of my work environment is my team. Having a good support system is extremely important in the mortgage industry. So much of my personal success can be attributed to their behind-the-scenes support. Having a strong team in place allows me to work as efficiently as possible and to stay focused.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

What I enjoy most about my role is how no two days are alike. I love working with my clients and knowing that I can help them achieve their homeownership dream or consolidate their current liabilities into something more manageable. To some, buying a home is the largest financial purchase they may make in their lives. Being a part of their journey is very rewarding. I am also grateful to assist clients with a refinance and give them an opportunity to take better care of their families. This provides me with great satisfaction and readiness to approach the next day!

What skill set does someone working in this kind of area need?

The greatest skill sets one must have, in my opinion, are excellent communication and patience. Like in most aspects of life, communication is a valuable asset to have. In the mortgage industry, it’s imperative that one communicate efficiently and effectively. Having patience is also important, as people respond differently depending upon the method and style of communication. No two clients are ever the same. Understanding that the mortgage process is quite complex and has many different variables that call on that patience from both the client and loan officer.

What advice would you give to someone looking to break into a career in your field?

My advice to someone considering a Home Lending Officer role would be to make sure they always actively listen to their clients. Clients are not always aware of the options and best solution to meet their financial goals. However, during conversations with those clients, we can uncover what those clients need. Also, always improve on your communications skills.

Where can a career at Citi take you?

Having a career at Citi provides you with endless opportunities throughout the bank and world, for that matter. You’ll have the opportunity to continue to develop yourself professionally should you consider pursuing a new venture. All without ever having to consider leaving the firm.

What makes Citi a good place to work?

Citi’s culture is what makes Citi a great place to work. The teams, endless opportunities and the variety of products and tools will position anyone to be successful in their role. As a salesperson, I have always felt that representing a brand such as Citi is half the battle. The other part of the equation is building a rapport with clients so that they want to do business with me. I am proud to be a representative of the Citi brand.

Define what success means to you.

Success to me, generally, is achieving my personal and professional goals. Knowing that I have met the needs of my clients while earning positive feedback from them, confirms my success in delivering excellent client experiences.

What do you do at Citi?

There are many components to what I do at Citi. As a Home Lending Officer, I am responsible for providing financing options to people who are purchasing or refinancing. I provide new business development opportunities to Citi through the origination of mortgages. I maintain business relationships with real estate brokers, attorneys, financial advisors, CPAs, developers, not-for-profit organizations and, most importantly, internal partners of the bank, for the sole purpose of promoting mortgage referrals. Outside referral sources give me the opportunity to refer potential clients to my internal partners, whether it is the need for insurance, banking or wealth management. Working at Citi allows me to be much more than a loan originator. I have the ability to counsel customers in order to uncover individual needs and direct them to internal partners when there is an opportunity to refer.

How does your role/department impact the larger organization?

My position allows me to facilitate financing options for customers with home buying and refinancing needs, but also allows me to retain and acquire assets for the organization that I can refer to my bank partners.

How did you begin a career in your field?

My career as a home lending officer began unexpectedly. I studied engineering in college and graduated with a BS in Business. After college, I worked in the advertising industry which helped to greatly develop my professional skills in sales, although advertising sales was never a career in which I saw myself long term. A friend in the industry suggested mortgage banking to me because he thought it would be a good fit. I soon began my first job as a mortgage banker. It has been 20 years since I made the decision to leave advertising to pursue a job in banking, and it is one of the best career decisions I have ever made.

What does your day-to-day job entail, and what do you like most about it?

I never know what I am walking into each day. There are many moving parts in the mortgage process, which require my direction. I am constantly juggling several balls, with five more being thrown in during the course of the day, and I cannot allow any one of them to drop. This makes my job intense but also exciting. I thrive in a fast-paced environment.

What is the best part about your work environment?

Many aspects of my work environment allow me to be effective in my role. First and foremost, the level of professionalism that I have seen from upper management is what sets Citi apart. They are always active in supporting my views and ideas, and ensuring the satisfaction of the customer. They have given me the opportunity to be autonomous in my decision-making, and this has been key to my success. I work with a team of people who are as passionate about their jobs as I am. I work in a very positive environment, with great people that I consider family. I have developed work relationships that foster teamwork and collaboration, which has allowed us to create great results. Lastly, I am a very social person, and enjoy talking and getting to know people. My role as a Home Lending Officer provides me the opportunity to get to know my clients on a very personal level. When working in a busy and fast-paced environment, it can at times be stressful, but it is the relationships with my clients that make it all worthwhile.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

What I enjoy most about my role is the difference that I make in the lives of my clients and their families. The home buying experience is an overwhelming process, whether someone is buying their first home or fifth home. I take pride in having the opportunity to educate and lead my clients through the mortgage process. The expression of gratitude that I receive from them, thanking me for making their dream come true, is what truly motivates me to perform in my role.

What skill set does someone working in this kind of area need?

A successful Home Lending Officer will need to be determined and possess a certain degree of tenacity that will lead them to success. They will also require leadership skills, which will allow them to successfully work with internal partners in executing a loan from start to finish. Someone working in this environment will need to be extremely organized and detail oriented, and master their skills in time management. Dealing with clients either in person or over the phone will require strong communication skills. All of these skills are equally important because they will be used daily in this role.

What advice would you give to someone looking to break into a career in your field?

If someone were looking to break into a career in this field, I would tell them to be prepared to work very hard, to be persistent and to never give up. They will need to follow their mentors and never veer off track. This is a demanding profession, but when you perfect your trade, it is rewarding on multiple levels.

At Citi, we get to be a part of that and provide other bundled services across the organization that benefit our clients. We educate our clients and create overall financial health and opportunity for every client at Citi.

How did you begin a career in your field?

I started as a loan processor for a builder group in my early 20’s. The homebuilder was impressed with my skills and ability to communicate with their clients. They insisted that I become a loan officer. It was a leap at the time, but one I am forever grateful for. My local and senior managers were incredible mentors. They required a lot of offsite sales training and mortgage banking certification courses. I invested a lot of time in my career to make sure I became an expert in my field. I’m always learning and listening.

I always say I’m busy getting busy so I’m busy. What I love most about my job is working with our clients and my business partners both internally and externally. How did you begin a career in your field?

I really enjoy helping people understand the mortgage process and strive to keep people calm during such a stressful time in their life since in most cases it is the biggest financial commitment of their life.

What is the best part about your work environment?

What makes Citi a good place to work?

The culture here is very strong and close knit. Everyone seems to be looking out for each other and not just his or her own personal interests and goals. I never felt it was this way at other banks. While working at other banks, it seemed like it was every man and woman for themselves.

Define what success means to you.

What do you do at Citi?

As a Home Lending Officer, I originate mortgages at Citi. My business is generated by referrals, from former clients and real estate agents. I network consistently within the real estate industry and I am a member of BNI, a networking group. I am also certified to originate mortgages for Citi employees, which deepens my relationships within Citi.

How does your role/department impact the larger organization?

The Home Lending Officer plays a vital role within the organization. We are helping customers achieve the dream of home ownership and/or improve their current financial situation with refinancing their existing mortgage for a lower payment, debt consolidation, term reduction, etc. We are also attracting, deepening and retaining assets along the way.

How did you begin a career in your field?

After I managed property for my family for seven years in various neighborhoods throughout Brooklyn and Manhattan, my father, asked me to join his business, a mortgage brokerage company, as his partner. Three months later, after my father passed suddenly, I started my own mortgage brokerage company.

What does your day-to-day job entail, and what do you like most about it?

As soon as I wake up, around 6:30 a.m., I check my business emails and reply to clients who have emailed me that morning. I get my act together and then I am out the door and walk to work, almost two miles. While walking, I make phone calls booking myself at a real estate agent’s office for something, be it an office meeting or a Lunch and Learn. I check in with my assistant and talk about the top deals of the day to work on. I will touch base with underwriters, if needed, before they get busy. I call clients and email a lot. I like to be on top of every deal that is in my pipeline. I try to attend all my closings, either purchase or refi. . Most importantly, I like to have a productive day.

What is the best part about your work environment?

My friends in the office who are my fellow originators and their assistants are the best part of my work environment. We spend a significant amount of time with each other and go to each other for assistance and support.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

I love being an originator. During the loan process when I call my client, they always pick up. From movie stars to music producers to NFL team owners, I am the most important person to them at the time of the mortgage. But, what I truly love to do is make their dream a reality. Working on a deal for a couple that has saved every penny to create their American dream makes me feel lucky that I am able to assist them with attaining that dream.

What skill set does someone working in this kind of area need?

An originator should be organized. Knowing how to work with so many personalities is another truly valuable asset. Ego has to remain in check as the client is king!

What advice would you give to someone looking to break into a career in your field?

It’s the sort of business that if you choose to work hard, you will see the rewards.

Where can a career at Citi take you?

Citi’s reputation and recognition are enormous factors in making Citi a good company to work for. Although I work and live in Manhattan, I have clients from all over the country and most of them know of Cit. It makes working at Citi easier, as a level of trust is already established.

What do you do at Citi?

I am a loan officer. My job is to help our clients find the best mortgage for their needs and make the process as smooth as possible.

How does your role/department impact the larger organization?

Anything involving a home purchase or refinance directly impacts one of the biggest financial assets in our customers’ lives. If I can make the mortgage experience an enjoyable one, our customers will be confident in using other services from Citi. And who knows, maybe some of the mortgage customers I have helped today will one day open a company and become a large corporate account for Citi.

How did you begin a career in your field?

I started as a loan officer five years ago at a small bank after graduate school. I had no idea where I was going to work after graduating. Some offers I received were interesting but too far away from where we lived, other job offers were not appealing to me. I have so much empathy for any young person trying to find their first job, it’s tough! Fortunately, a friend of one of my husband’s colleagues saw some potential in me and hired me as a loan officer. He trained me and I stayed with his bank for one year before accepting this opportunity with Citi.

What does your day-to-day job entail, and what do you like most about it?

Around 9 a.m., the emails and calls start coming in. Typically, in the morning the real estate agents and other professionals ask for updates or clarifications on their loans. My job is to keep all parties informed of the loan process so that they can feel confident in Citi. I also reach out to agents and customers who have asked about loans but have not yet started the process with us. The next set of calls come in around 6 p.m. when my customers get off work and have time to call about a mortgage. It’s okay, though; I am usually home by then and can talk from my comfortable chair while drinking a tea. The best part about my job is that I get to help people buy their dream home. It is a great feeling when, after a smooth deal, I hear how our lending team made our clients happy and satisfied.

What is the best part about your work environment?

My terrific coworkers. I love knowing that all the people who I work with are working toward the same goal of providing excellent customer service. There is a great culture at Citi and sometimes it doesn’t feel like I am at work.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

All the people I get to meet and talk to. We have wonderful clients at Citi, and being able to help them makes me appreciate my role as a mortgage professional.

What skill set does someone working in this kind of area need?

They would need to have a warm personality, be good at mathematics and be willing to study the lending guidelines for our various loan products. But most importantly, they would need to work hard.

What advice would you give to someone looking to break into a career in your field?

I recommend having a strong financial background, be comfortable with mathematics, have a positive attitude, and give 110% every day.

Where can a career at Citi take you?

A career at Citi can provide you the opportunity to work with some very talented people and to expand with an organization that has a stellar reputation in the industry. Everyone you meet will know your company, and you get an instant degree of respect when you work for the best.

What makes Citi a good place to work?

The culture at Citi would be hard to replicate elsewhere. Everyone from the highest-level managers to those who are just starting seem to reflect a positive customer-oriented attitude. You never feel like you are by yourself at Citi; your team always has your back.

Define what success means to you.

Success to me is setting goals and accomplishing them. Our loan origination team continually sets ambitious goals for customer satisfaction and, working together, we make it happen. We also try to improve ourselves and find ways to be better every single year.
