The Senior Lead Counsel 1 role is a senior level individual contributor position that will provide legal support to the U.S. Personal Banking Mortgage business of Citigroup.  This attorney will be part of a legal team working closely with business and functional partners and management and be relied on as an expert on critical legal, regulatory and compliance matters, including mortgage product development and implementation. The attorney will interact regularly with senior business and legal management within Citi and collaborate across functions and business lines.

The attorney will report to a Director in U.S. Personal Banking - Legal and will be part of the Mortgage & Mortgage Servicing Operations Legal Team, working directly with business management and functional partners in the support of the mortgage business, focusing on all areas of law related to mortgage originations.

Qualified candidates must have extensive experience in federal and state mortgage, consumer credit, and other secured lending laws and regulations, including the provisions of Truth-in-Lending/Regulation Z, RESPA/Regulation X, the Equal Credit Opportunity Act/Regulation B, the Fair Housing Act, the Community Reinvestment Act, the Fair Credit Reporting Act/Regulation V, UDAAP, among others.

Responsibilities include:

  • Providing legal counsel regarding all aspects of the originations process of the Mortgage Business, supporting strategic business initiatives, providing subject matter expertise in the interpretation and analysis of relevant laws, rules, and regulations, and advising business and functional partners on legal matters and risks impacting the business;
  • Reviewing products, offerings, business plans/strategies, consumer documents and disclosures ensuring they meet applicable state and federal laws and regulations and internal policies and procedures;
  • Collaborating across internal lines of business and control/support functions to achieve coordinated and efficient outcomes on matters of common interest; coordinating closely with other attorneys in the Mortgage Legal team;
  • Serving as primary attorney covering assigned business activities and providing sound legal analysis and guidance to business partners in collaboration with others in Legal as well as functional and control partners;
  • Proactively identifying and evaluating legal, regulatory, and other risks relevant to the business, providing review, analysis and judgment for escalation as appropriate.

 Candidate must have:

  • A Juris Doctor degree;
  • A license in good standing to practice law in at least one state;
  • A preference of 7 years, but a minimum of 5 years of relevant legal experience in financial services or mortgage originations;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Proven analytical and organizational skills; and
  • Demonstrably strong writing skills.

Primary Location Full Time Salary Range:

$174,320.00 - $261,480.00


Salary shown is for full-time positions and will be prorated for part-time hires based on number of hours worked.

The hourly rate corresponding to the annual range is:

$83.80 - $125.71
