Role Summary:

The Chief Risk Officer (CRO) for Branded Cards is responsible for end-to-end ownership of risk strategy & execution including credit losses. This role partners with business leadership to navigate risk concerns and attain portfolio objectives. The CRO is accountable for leveraging the expertise of shared functions such as collections, governance, loss forecasting and risk systems to ensure the full needs of the business portfolio teams are met/exceeded. The individual serves as a member of the Risk Management Leadership Team and leads a team of both onshore and offshore resources.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

  • Develop & lead portfolio credit risk strategy and execution
  • Provide end-to-end portfolio risk management services to Citi Retail Services/Branded Cards CEO and Business Management team contributing to financial results
  • Provide risk direction and expertise to the CEO and Business Management team by working with business-level risk teams; maintain strong relationships with regulators, especially OCC
  • Break down silos and build partnerships across shared functions and regions, creating and sustaining a network of strong client relationships
  • Assess fraud or franchise risk and revenue/cost implications
  • Lead staff in establishing risk management procedures and standards, developing risk management analyses and reports, developing approval procedures and guidelines on risk limits by type of product and / or transaction, and in establishing management and administrative procedures to ensure adherence to policies
  • Provide subject matter and technical expertise reflecting understanding of products and broad knowledge of risks across credit product spectrum
  • Serve as a point of escalation for key issues or time sensitive decisions.  Make final decisions on complex risk issues or products, policy creation, etc.
  • Assess stress testing impact of risk on portfolio value and capital and advises the business accordingly.
  • Leverage shared functions & centers of excellence to support portfolios ensuring:
    • Soundness & implementation of credit and collections policies in partnership with shared collections function
    • Appropriate risk appetite for portfolios leveraging shared function expertise and in partnership with Retail Services Management
    • Governance & controls oversight
    • Successful execution of risk systems for business
  • Partner with modeling team on new tools, machine learning and alternate data
  • Manage new and existing contract negotiations, leveraging Partner Management and Business Development teams
  • Monitor emerging risks from changes in Economic, Regulatory, Consumer, Competitor or Political environments and assess and address the potential impacts to the CRS business
  • Establish & maintain strong, transparent relationships with Internal Audit, FCR and the Regulators
  • Manage vendors as applicable

  • Proven understanding of risk in current environment (to include CCAR, stress testing, analytics, and modelling)
  • Proven track record establishing, implementing, and using risk models
  • Broad and deep risk management experience
  • Strong knowledge of financial services industry and current market conditions
  • Strong analytical skills & business acumen
  • Negotiates and influences internally and externally at senior levels
  • Ability to leverage advanced analytics to establish new metrics and initiatives that maintain a leading edge in current economic and digital environment
  • Superior ability to drive results and manage change to achieve/surpass business targets
  • Outstanding people leadership skills that attract, develop, and retain high performing risk management talent
  • Builds and leads a high performing risk team, use expertise and experience to develop a pipeline of talented leaders
  • 15+ years’ experience in credit card and consumer lending risk management roles in a global organization
  • Bachelor’s degree: Masters preferred
