Citi Branded Cards provides payment and credit solutions to consumers and small businesses, with more than 47 million accounts globally. The US Branded Cards business serves over 33 million accounts, comprising of Citi Branded Cards Proprietary and partner card products including Costco, American Airlines, AT&T and Expedia.

Role Summary:

The Head of Strategic Initiatives will play a critical role in driving the strategic risk management agenda across Branded Cards portfolios. This role will report directly to the Chief Risk Officer (CRO) Branded Cards and Lending. The responsibilities include coordination of projects and activities within business as well as communications to the senior management teams across Independent Risk. The Strategic Initiatives head will drive all the initiatives for future success of the business including innovation in both data and capabilities, risk readiness for any macroeconomic event and all branded cards pricing initiatives. This role interacts with a wide group of stakeholders across the business, Independent Risk, Branded Cards and Lending functional heads / teams, the Risk Utilities as well as internal and external oversight groups. Also, help lead the execution of the Risk Management vision as well as work with the Risk and control teams to ensure adherence to regulatory, compliance and control priorities across the function and business. The successful candidate will also have responsibility to lead selected strategic initiatives and special projects critical to the direction of business.

Key responsibilities of this position include:

  • Partner with Branded Cards pricing team and cross functional teams and lead credit risk analytics to drive portfolio pricing strategies

  • Own the strategy and execution of recession readiness strategies

  • Lead the team to establish frameworks for portfolio profitability by establishing / participating in enhancing the  Risk Appetite framework

  • Partner with Branded Cards CRO and the leadership team to provide analytical support for big picture questions and portfolio trends. Have a bias towards actionable insights that help inform our Risk Management strategies

  • Coordinate with horizontal team to align on Branded Cards Risk Capital limits / RWA / ACL / Loss forecasting 

  • Devise a comprehensive test and learn strategy to evaluate alternate data, new tools, and techniques to establish a culture of innovation and drive strategic and sustainable growth for cards portfolios

  • Ensure quality and on-time preparation of senior management and risk committee materials, and materials for regulatory meetings (OCC, FRB)                                                                                         

  • Engage relevant stakeholders in executing on numerous governance related activities, infrastructure enhancements and regulatory reporting for Branded Cards & Lending initiatives

  • Coordinate and interact with a diverse range of stakeholders including first line, 2nd Line and 3rd line risk teams   

  • Ensure high quality performance and output from offshore teams partnering with the relevant team leads, maintaining optimal balance in work and resource allocation between onshore vs. offshore teams                              


  • 10+ years of relevant risk management or financial services experience required

  • 5+ years of people management experience, including experience as a manager of managers

  • Possesses a complex mix of skills and leadership attributes including in-depth knowledge and experience of Cards P&L, sophisticated analytical abilities including the know-how to interface with the modeling teams on sophisticated techniques such as machine learning

  • Demonstrated excellence in managing an analytical team - must have experience in delivering large-scale credit policy changes and communicating them to a diverse audience

  • Experience in managing and negotiating with stakeholders to further a common agenda in a matrix environment

  • Ability to prioritize and project manage in a dynamic, fast-paced environment

  • In-depth knowledge of Cards P&L and business, with the ability to anticipate downstream impacts of policy changes or hypothesis/idea generation

  • A penchant for driving executional and analytical excellence through personal examples and ability to effectively engage and inspire the team

  • Education Level: Bachelor's Degree, MBA/MS preferred; Education includes demonstrated knowledge in an analytic field including engineering, mathematics, statistics
