The Head of PBWM, LATAM and Legacy Accounting Policy (the Head) is focused on partnering with the business’s senior management and staff, Citi’s controllers’ teams, SOX team, KPMG, Internal Audit, MCA, and M&A staff in connection with its technical accounting matters.  This role entails providing senior management clear and actionable communication of accounting issues and solutions, managing their expectations as to accounting outcomes, managing accounting risks and controls, leading the areas’ Accounting Policy staff, researching technical accounting matters and advising on the appropriate accounting treatment for new transactions under US GAAP and IFRS. The Head is also responsible for interfacing with the Citi Global Head of Accounting Policy, implementing its business’s new accounting standard implementations, developing and maintaining accounting policies, and ensuring that its financial statement items are presented in conformity with US GAAP in standalone and Citi’s consolidated financial statements. The group is organized to provide accounting advisory for Citi’s Personal Banking & Wealth Management (PBWM), LATAM and Legacy businesses.

Qualifications:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required.  Must be able to quickly analyze complex issues, identify key questions that need to be asked, form appropriate views on both transaction economics and application of GAAP, and convey most important aspects of actions needed and transaction impact verbally and in writing.  These skills are critical to the success of the candidate.  Additionally, the candidate must also be able to receive and act on constructive feedback.

  • Demonstrated track record of effectively presenting complex issues and transactions to senior management at large institutions in a clear and concise manner, and a path to concluding on actions needed to best position Citi to both mitigate accounting risk and achieve objectives.

  • Ability to quickly identify accounting issues and risks that are of key importance and immediately take action to ensure timely solutions and avoid negative surprises.

  • Ability to escalate and effectively explain while managing expectations of topics to the appropriate level in the organization in a timely manner.

  • Ability to work in cross-functional team, gain respect of peers and clients as a trusted subject matter expert, which is validated through 360-performance feedback process.

  • Ability to be self-aware of strengths and developmental areas, and willingness to act on addressing areas of improvement.

  • Takes ownership of matters requiring attention, knows the right questio0ns to ask, what GAAP to apply, and coordinates with relevant-firm subject matter experts to completely vet complex issues, to form well-thought through and correct accounting conclusions.  This includes ability to correctly assess when peer compares are appropriate and/or reviews with KPMG and potential engagement with regulators.

  • 10-15 years financial relevant large-firm accounting experience.  Big 4 accounting firm & financial services experience preferred

  • In-Depth understanding of SEC Reporting & Sarbanes Oxley/Internal Controls

  • Demonstrated track record of analyzing and concluding on highly complex technical accounting matters

  • CPA or equivalent certification required

  • The individual must possess excellent interpersonal and client service skills as well as have the ability to work very closely with many different levels of management.

  • Fast thinker/quick learner and possess the ability to work effectively in a rapidly changing environment in order to meet deadlines

  • The successful candidate will have the ability to multi-task while working on long-term projects

Responsibilities:

  • Drive accounting policy enforcement and ensure that Citi's business activities are reported in conformity with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).

  • Facilitate the proper implementation of new accounting standards, disseminate information on current accounting topics and recent developments that affect Citi

  • Lead implementation efforts for new accounting standards, primarily US GAAP but including IFRS

  • Advise business heads and managers regarding the accounting implications of new products and changes to existing products

  • Research technical accounting issues and consult with other Citi Regional and Corporate Accounting Policy groups on complex transactions

  • Prepare/Review detailed documentation to support accounting conclusions of new/modified products and complex transactions.

  • Provide accounting training (on existing and new pronouncements) to Finance and Business teams.

  • Use communication and diplomacy to guide and influence others, in particular colleagues in other areas and occasional external customers

  • Advise on the financial statement review process to ensure all business matters are appropriately disclosed

  • Participate in the development of Citi’s Global accounting policies and positions.

  • Appropriately assess risk when business decisions are made, demonstrating particular consideration for the firm's reputation and safeguarding Citigroup, its clients and assets, by driving compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations, adhering to Policy, applying sound ethical judgment regarding personal behavior, conduct and business practices, and escalating, managing and reporting control issues with transparency.

  • Provide overall leadership to the PBWM accounting policy team, including resource allocation, prioritization and team development


Education:

  • Bachelors/University degree, Master’s degree preferred

We are currently working on a hybrid schedule consisting of 2-3 days in office and the remainder remote (specific details depend on location and business group). This is not a remote only role.
