Key Responsibilities

The Global Head of Workplace Design is responsible for the development, implementation, and maintenance of the workplace design standards for the global corporate office portfolio. These standards will support a new way of working by creating innovative and human centered environments which will deliver an excellent experience and an optimized real estate footprint.  

Critical tasks include: incorporating the latest thinking around workplace, understanding  business requirements, translating these needs into the design, garnering support from stakeholders, providing oversight of the design process to ensure quality, managing 3rd party support partners, consistent communication with stakeholders, and creating mechanisms measure and incorporate feedback.

The role, which reports into the Global Head of Operations, will provide the opportunity to manage direct staff, engage with senior leadership, and influence significant workplace design projects across the globe.

The individual should possess a strong design background, proven leadership acumen, excellent program management skills, good understanding of the end to end design & construction process, and the ability to work effectively across geographies.

As owner of the global workplace design standards for Citi, you will:

  • Advise the global head of operations and CRS senior leadership on the latest thinking in workplace strategy. Maintain a good understanding of the leadership vision and drive inspired and transformative solutions. Enlist external advisors and experts to remain current on latest industry thinking.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to understand requirements, build consensus, and translate those needs into a set of global standards and ultimately exceptional physical spaces. (i.e.  asset management, transactions, construction, technology, executive services, critical facilities, security, sustainability, risk and control, HR, etc..)
  • Lead the Global Workplace Design team in the creation of a concise but comprehensive workplace design package which directs various aspects related to workplace design & construction; (i.e. strategy, programming, space types, performance specifications, MEP design, sustainability impact, materials and finishes, furniture & fixtures, technology integration, planning methodologies, and occupancy models, etc..)
  • Manage the process of change, ensuring there are tools, processes, and mechanisms to maintain, update, and communicate changes to the design standards and strategic approach. Maintain a regular publishing schedule supported by review sessions with stakeholders.  Understand downstream impacts of changes to the standards on partner organizations and mitigate accordingly (i.e. technology, security, amenities, etc..).
  • Closely manage third-party contributors to the design process (i.e. architects, engineers, furniture manufacturers, external strategic advisors, peer reviewers, etc.) ensuring they are properly onboarded and informed on the expectations for our workplaces. Be a strong voice in the procurement process for workplace related initiatives (i.e. change management, workplace technology, etc..).
  • Develop a workplace delivery model which results in a regionally tailored, but globally consistent workplace design. Establish and own processes which ensure standards are appropriately applied, with checkpoints throughout the design process (test fit, SD, DD, post occupancy, etc..) and a mechanism to address exception requests.
  • Act as an advocate for the workplace strategy and design approach, developing a sound business case and speaking at all levels of the firm on the benefits. Balance business needs with corporate goals, adjusting strategies where possible and tempering expectations when necessary.
  • Support project delivery teams through training and educational initiatives to ensure understanding of the standards and underlying processes. Remove design related roadblocks to ensure successful project delivery.
  • Create and maintain processes and tools to capture feedback, lessons learned, best practices etc.. and incorporate them into the standards. Foster a ‘test and learn’ approach supported by a program to conduct pilots, pop ups, etc.. 
  • Establish a method to gauge performance and user experience and compare to both internal and externa benchmarks. Create a set of key metrics and be a champion for the tools / systems needed to capture this data, (i.e. sensors, apps, etc..)

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Interior Design / Planning or a related field from an accredited school. Graduate degree in related fields such as Facility/Space Planning, Real Estate, Facility Management is preferred.
  • 10 -15 years relevant experience in commercial architecture, interior design, workplace planning and programming, building construction, life safety, building codes and migration management. 5-10 years of direct global corporate real estate and/or financial services experience preferred.

Desired Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience in developing design standards and large-scale workplace strategy initiatives for corporate offices.
  • Understanding of current workplace trends including applied knowledge of alternative and agile / unassigned / activity-based workplace strategies and concepts.
  • Understanding of and ability to communicate how business needs are changing and how people, places, and technologies drive change within the workplace.
  • Experience managing multiple workplace design projects across geographies.
  • Experience with occupancy and space planning, construction practices, materials, sustainability and Net Zero initiatives, and FF&E specifications.
  • Knowledge of the construction industry best practices and standard procedures, building infrastructure and their impact from a planning perspective
