Job Purpose:

Physical commodities shipping, insurance and financing lawyer

Job Background/context:

This person will be part of the wider Commodities legal team within the Markets Legal Department. This is a critical hire for the team and the business due to the growth and expansion of Citi’s Global Commodities desk into structured financing in both physical and financial assets

Key Responsibilities:

Counsel will support the current trading activities of the Global Commodities desk and the desk’s continued expansion into physical commodity financings globally.

As part of this function, counsel will work closely with the other members of the commodities legal team in London.  Counsel’s key responsibilities will include:

  • Assistance on structured transactions with respect to all physical commodity products in particular in respect of the transport (on sea and land), storage and insurance aspects;
  • Management of more vanilla physical and financial trading transactions;
  • Coordination with EMEA and US regulatory, credit, compliance, risk management, tax and other control functions as part of the overall risk architecture of the bank;
  • Liaison with the EMEA regulatory group as a commodities product expert;

Person Specification

Knowledge/Experience (required):

  • Legal aspects of multi-jurisdiction transport and storage of physical commodities
  • Understanding of legal risks associated with the sale and purchase of commodities
  • Knowledge of structured commodity transactions
  • Knowledge of EU and member state regulation applicable to the physical commodity markets
  • Understanding of derivatives for portfolio risk management (knowledge of ISDA and other market standard documentation preferred)

Skills:

  • General legal skills: drafting, negotiation, issue spotting, problem solving
  • Ability to communicate effectively with front office personnel / non-lawyers
  • Ability to grasp complex issues and structures quickly
  • Strong project management skills
  • Ability to facilitate knowledge sharing for legal team (mentoring) and front office personnel
